? Amal 276 LH \ RH float

Hi, I've overhauled and installed my 1 1\16 276 (new Amal production) RH float (as original for the GF), and all seems well this time, apart from some leaking from the overflow hole when put on the side stand (= quite low angle, did of course not have this problem with the previous LH float model (a smaller bore 276, IPWO, but not that good at acceleration and higher speed).

Have lowered the float a little to compensate, but can't really go any lower, and have to always remember to cut the petrol supply immediately when stopping the engine, or else I get some dripping (and I hate petrol on the mag! ...or catching fire in the midst of town :O). Also the tickover is quite affected when getting the bike vertical.

Is this to be expected with a RH float + sidestand angle (and am I having to adapt to some new routines, and maybe install a drip shield) ?

i would fit a drip shield you dont want petrol on your mag unless your planing a barbeque

Yes, I should fit the tray in any circumstance.

To those with rh float 276's, is it normal that it may overflow with the bike tilted on side stand?
....or may it just be my sidestand stop-lug being too worn (bike's angle getting past what is to be expected from a normal float level).

Sorry Erling... another thread I seemed to have missed.

I've not had any experience with dripping or overflowing float bowls. Perhaps maybe because the A7 with it's twin carbs is very upright on its side stand, I actually have to find a small hole in the ground to stand the bike or it'll fall over. I do think that with these types of carbs it is crucial that the bike is vertical.

Edit: I don't think I'd want to be without a drip tray.

Thanks for the clarification, in my case I have the opposite side stand behaviour, trying to find a high spot or it may fall over to the left. Will get some extra material welded to the stand stop lug, it's very worn, that should end my woes, and can probably reset float level to std.

In your case, you may try the opposite, grind off a little to get a few more degrees of tilt (then maybe your rh float carb will start overflowing too

Or better still... How about a swop of stands??  Mine is probably too new and as you say "grind off a little to get a few more degrees of tilt"

Went out and checked a little more, the stand goes slightly past where it should stop against the frame lug, and this translates into some unnecessary strong bike tilt. I now suspect this is mainly due to enlarged \ oval frame lug + stand holes, and wear at 2 stand lugs surface against the frame lug (arrows)(and yes, needs paint) makes the problem worse. A few millimeters here and there at the top makes quite some impact at the end of the stand.

ps, fixing this should also fix my carb problem, so am not wandering offtopic  

On your bike, there should be no problem lowering the angle a little, f.ex. experiment by fitting a trough bolt of slightly smaller diameter, not the perfect solution, but should give some slack resulting in some extra tilt (in practice duplicating my problem, becoming the solution on your bike. Yes, what you need is a worn out stand

It looks the same colour as clean Castrol R40 oil... or maybe just paint from the hippy sixties!

I have the same floppy sidestand...perhaps that's why a concentric carb was fitted by the DPO...

Ahh, all the details needing taking care of ! Yellow is the frame primer, the purple primer is surely very old (and probably very toxic so must be very good!). Will get the worn parts rebuildt by welding then grind'em down to good shape again

As for my carb, asking those with 276 and lh float, normal to get some flooding if tilted a little too far on the side stand ?
