Converting the nacelle to SR headlamp
« on: 17.11. 2012 20:04 »
The nacelle is on the way out.  When I remove the nacelle then the front fork covers, will a set of front outer sleeves slide into place and cover the springs, forks, and look like the SR should or am I missing something?

After removing the fork tube nuts, bottom yoke bolts, will the front fork slide out of the top yoke w/o using 12 sticks of dynamite?  I have a few aluminum and brass drift pins.

Ay other tips to share for this event would be appreciated.

As always, a big thanks guys,

Steve

only slacken the top nuts a thread or two then with the bottom yoke bolts removed give the top nuts a tap with a hide or rubber mallet this is usually enough to drop the stanchion from its taper.

Not too sure what is correct to replace the trousers, either gaiters and short shrouds with lugs or long shrouds ( Goldie I think) and headlamp brakets , probably the short shrouds

Bill,

Tanks for the reply!

Hide and rubber mallets are ready and waiting.  No idea what condition the forks are in so what tools will I need to remove parts and what parts should be checked/serviced/replaced.  Seals, springs - anything else?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve.
To prepare you self for fork removal, a strap spanner or seal holder tool is required if you want to salvage the seal holders. This is a tubular design tool with external tangs to locate into the seal holder slots, I,ve made one so not difficult to construct, but they can be bought. The bushes may well need replacing, would be best to check with forks still assembled to the bike. Certainly you will require new seals, and may be seal holders, together with bush shims. A point to note is when assembling the seal holder to fork leg, a leak proof connection has to be made, in the old days they used twine, but PTFE tape or silicon is my suggestion. When you have removed the fork holders you will find a circlip (not the type with locating holes for pliers, just a plain ring, which is a challenge to remove), this has to be removed to enable inner fork leg together with bushes to be withdrawn.
Reaasembly is straight forward, except trying to get the top of the fork back into the yokes, again a tool is available which screws into the top of the fork, and when pulled forces fork taper into the yoke. Again I,ve made one, using an old fork top nut and machining off the hexagon and welding a suitable bar.

So many decisions on what to do with this Frankencycle.  I have seen a few photos of Super Rockets w/the nacelle - most without.  If I go with the tach & speedo mounted on the same bracket, they along with the headlight brackets, cables, 90 degree drive, are going to price out at $800-$900 (or more) which figures heavily into the budget.  The nacelle does have a nice vintage look - even though it apparently is off an A65.

Hi Bill
The "western" barred bike isnt mine, I was only showing how the separate headlamp setup looks.

My Bike is the one in the photo by the sea
I had a set of higher bars on it when I first built it , probably 4" rise I found them ok
but fitted the correct pattern when I found a nice SS one

Sorry to swing this thread off at tangent, but Hitchcock motorcycles have a very good range of bars Bill.

Hey John,

Well now I don't feel like such an uninformed buyer - my SR came with a motor, gearbox, and a spare RR motor.  Missing tons of stuff and tons of installed A65 parts that are definitely confusing me.  I used to do eBay searches for just A10 parts, now I am after A65 parts too.

Check back in 10 years - I might have a warm oil tank by then *smile*

I use Triumph export bars of the early 70's - not the T140 type. More Western than Ape I think. Suit me just fine.
