I am looking for a split link.
The hand book states 5/8 x 3/8, is this correct ? I can only see links for DID chains, what are DID chains ?

Thanks,
Roy.

DID is the name of the supplier, Reynolds used to be the most popular make just type DID chains into google and you can go to their website
-
Hi Roy,
DID is just a brand name
Beware different makes of chain use different pin sizes and plate widths
Check you existing chain for brand marking, and work from there

As already stated be careful as the split link is not interchangeable with different brands of chain.
My latest is chain is Regina and seems of good quality and lasting well.
-
I use Renolds chains, as were originally fitted. There are many alternatives, including various O ring 530 chains. As mentioned, make sure your spring link is the same make as your chain.
-
Thank lads, well I learn a little more every day.
It looks like I have some investigation to do.
Is the makers name stamped on every link ?
I have a fully enclosed chain so have to do a bit of striping down to find a name.
Roy.

Reynolds is definately stamped on side plate but having looked at some old ones not each link and not always on both sides. You may be able to check by simply removing the rubber bung in chaincase.
Cant say about other makes.

All the buddies I hang out with that have old bikes swear by DID XL chains.
So of course I had to be different and bought Regina. *smile*
The have Hardlies, I have a BSA.
Your chain should be a 530 regardless of who made it.

Have a chat with this bloke;

There isn't a thing about chains he don't know...

I stock Regina and Elite chains. I haven't had any problems with either. I also stock split links separately. Some customers, when buying chain, buy an extra split link. This chart might be helpful. https://sites.google.com/site/priorymagnetos/chains (https://sites.google.com/site/priorymagnetos/chains)

Hi Andrew,
Not looking for a new chain at the moment, just a spare split link but I didn't realize that it was so complicated, *dunno*

And to complicate matters further must only be fitted one way *smiley4*

Don't know for certain about an A10, but none of my unit construction Brits (Triumph, Norton, and BSA) could accommodate an o-ring chain. The o-rings make the total package wider, causing it to rub on the gearbox case, primary, or both.
-
Roy, easiest way , if you've got a local motorbike shop is take the chain and see if they have the right link oh plus a spare.
-
A unit construction Norton? Must be a lightweight. I have never tried an O ring chain on an A7 or A10 but I have heard that there is room to accommodate the extra width. Can anyone confirm? Certainly no chance with a big Norton twin. Even going from a 5/16 x 5/8 to a 3/8 x 5/8 can cause grief.

Wearing out a chain on a Norton Jubilee would be an achievement.

Depends on the brand of Chain,, (#1 on the Andy Chain guy in the UK) but people do all kinds of things to make it work, On older bikes that rarely get ridden I use a local chain company and their 530 HD grade chain works great and lasts a long time. They make a regular 530 too and for lightweight bikes its fine. Its important to know your dimensions when sourcing a link, for example the above company supplys 530 in regular and HD (Heavy duty).
See: http://www.bikebandit.com/aftermarket-parts/motorcycle-wheels-and-final-drive/chains/western-power-sports-530-standard-motorcycle-chain
(Dealer price-warehouse cost is even cheaper)
Some turn down their sprockets and run a 520 O ring and that was the hot trick for a long time but the problem is heat treat on the sprockets and not for the timid.
But many seem to run the modern X ring chain and they have extensive benefits but with out the clearance issues when running the 530 width in X ring. I have a few boxs of them to try but have not been riding much lately so untested but a prelim clearance check shows them having a great deal of promise.
I would HIGHLY recommend ALWAYS carrying a spare master link. (many reasons) But the modern chain requires the pins to be smooshed into place so not easy to remove and replace is the only downside. (Plus a good tool to do it). Was just discussing chain options with another guy and while chains have their place,, I LOVE *loveit* *loveit* the belt drives on primarys and final drives, I have a number of Buells and several Sporties and I just think its the greatest thing in the world,. Not really relevant here except for the primaries.. But thats my opinion *smiley4*
