Title: Speedo Fault
Post by: Worty on 26.08. 2017 21:36
Hello again everyone.

The needle on my speedo does not move smoothly (jerky movements) and both the trip meter and odometer do weird things.  Occasionally, the trip meter will jump when it turns over from 9 to 10 miles.  Instead of reading 10 miles it'll read 20.  Today, on a long run, the odometer rolled over to 40,000 miles.  When it got to 40,009 miles it ended up reading 40,510.  Any ideas, tips or details of people who can fix it?

The needle in Chronometric heads do jump; they do not move smoothly. Something about the mechanism.

Sounds like the Odometer drums are glued together with crud so are moving together.

Have a look in 'Services, Parts Suppliers, Manufacturers (https://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?board=46.0)' for recommendations of where to get the unit sorted.

I used Ian Bartrum near Beccles in Suffolk for mine 01502 477049. He did a great job.

I agree his workmanship is faultless, the down side however is that he can take a while to carry out the work.

As always, thanks everyone! Will get on the case re your recommendations.  Can anyone recommend a simple DIY route to clearing out gunge that doesn't involve b*******g the whole thing up.  I have heard some types of spray cleaner can help (and avoiding WD40).

Please read that PDF document that kiwigf posted: It strongly suggests that you do not use anything strong to clean the guts as it will likely strip the printing from the drums and face; and you don't want that! *sad2* .

By the way, Chronometric Services did my work while I waited, and charged a pittance. Maybe he liked my face!

Cheers Greybeard. I've checked out Chronometric Services on the interweb and will call them to see how they're fixed for servicing the speedo.  I may well take a ride down there and whip it off on arrival (the speedo, that is) if he can look at it while I wait.  Hopefully he'll like my face too and only charge a pony.

I guess he's not too far away from you. Good luck with it.

60 miles or so - steady run out.  Best day run to date was 234m with 180m the previous week - never missed a beat.  Oh, and these figures weren't down to odometer error!!

You must be *&^%$%^ joking..............!!  Took the speedo out today and checked odometer wheels.  Reason for the problem of incorrect reading is, I think, because one of the 'comb' springs that secures the wheel into position is bent outwards.  Tried to push it up but would need to remove all the wheels to bend it up to get it to engage -there also seems to be a couple of spacers missing according to online diagrams.  On looking at the intricacies of it all, and the fact it's probably not been cleaned since Noah was a boy, it's going straight to Russell Smalley for a full service or exchange.  These things may be super reliable, but they're way beyond my capabilities and patience.  Full marks for those who persist with servicing their own units.  Personally, I would sooner be on the road!

Yup, they look like tricky little buggers.

You, Sir, are not kidding!!  If I was to attempt it, I'd spend most of the time devising tools to make the job easier.  I can take most stuff apart and put it back together again, but I do like to be able to actually hold the parts with my fingers *eek*

Well I was prompted by this thread to take my b31' s chronometric apart, as it had a similar issue, with the 10, 100 and 1000 numbers jumping up every 10 miles.

I found the first of the five number reels had a worn "ratchet" on one side which caused it not to lock in position as each mile ticked over, this caused it to move the adjacent 10 mile reel and so on.

As a temporary fix I moved the duff reel to the 10,000 mile position where it will cause less harm.

I don't know where I will find a replacement reel! I guess I might end up having to take it to a specialist speedo fixer, or keep having to reset it to back to zero again every 10,000 miles  *conf*

It was VERY fiddly getting the 5 reels back in position,  *respect* to those speedo specialists!

Mate, mine went straight to Russell Smalley, a magnificent man here in the UK who used to work for Smiths!  Cost will be £75-ish for a full clean and rebuild.  I've tried (and failed) to put the odometer back together again on another chronometric and it was an absolute &%$% to do - never again.  I reckon the specialists are either magicians or have some special technique to get all the ratchets, springs and reels back together and located correctly - I've not even bothered looking at the rest of the mechanism.

I'm not a watch maker, nor do I intend to be.  If I want a watch repaired, I'll take it to someone who can repair watches - simples!!!!

Oh, and full marks to those who do have the patience and skills to learn - much praise. *respect*
