Title: 8" singled sided front brake shoes
Post by: a101960 on 22.02. 2018 19:45
Now and again during discussions about BSA front brakes there are references made to the later floating type brake shoes.  On my A10 I have an A65 8” single sided front brake hub. My question is this: Can the floating type shoes be fitted to this brake? If they can be is it just as simple as swapping out the shoes or is there more to it than that? The actual brake plate that I am using is the original A10 single sided ally plate (the type fitted with a torque reaction arm).

Do you have this brake? I don’t think is a65 but was fitted to gold stars and some a10s. It’s actually on my b31. I think I heard the a65 version has extra ribs in the drum?

I got this brake to work REALLY well by building up the leading shoe flat cam surface 020” with weld, so it contacts the hub first. I have longer term plans to reverse the brake lever to achieve the same effect, once I get the shoes relined, I’ll also remove the weld when I do that.

I’ve not heard of the floating shoe mod, sorry.

That’s the single side hub. Have one on the plunger and it indeed is a good one. If squeezed hard it lifts the back wheel... almost  *smile*

Hi All,
There are several versions of the single sided 8in. wheel
The early Flash and M21 use I believe a steel unfinned  part ?

No the number of fins is the same, the different depth of the hub is inside the spoke flange
1 1/4in. wide shoes for the Goldie and 1 3/8in. shoes for the A65
B44's also used a version

I had the good luck to get a goldie front brake on my first A7SS , worked great really impressed with it but unfortunately even the best brakes don't work on loose grit ,I hit a bus head on in 1967 ,low speed but I remember the locked front wheel    *doh* *,it went blank for a while after that ,woke up in a pub bar ,headed off in the ambo and when I saw my poor bike again someone had nicked the from wheel ,from a police compound !!
