Whatever make or model you have, first test the dynamo is giving volts, test the battery (charge if needed and refit) then start bike (reasonable tickover) watch ammeter, switch on all lights, ammeter should dive towards minus. rev the bike and the ammeter should rise to over 0 towards plus, after a while it may/will settle on 0 given a good battery.

One thing I discovered last week on 2 different bikes with electronic voltage regulators is that if the battery is flat or disconnected you get no dynamo output. Electronic voltage regulators need a battery in good order to allow them to bring the dynamo on line.
With a mechanical regulator, the dynamo will come on line and power the lights in the absence of a battery.

dynamo is giving up to 20 volts i will try charging the new battery as it had gone flat i was used to the mechanical control which worked with a flat battery hope it works,

Good advice from Bill... I also find what is helpful, and that is I have fitted on all my bikes, an electronic battery status monitor from AO Services (Alan Osbourne) The old type voltmeter obviously wont show any reading if battery is correct and there is no load on the battery, however the electronic device will show green if there is a charge indicating that dynamo is working correctly, it'll show a fast flashing red if charge output is too much or a slow flashing red if battery is very low while engine is off. Well worth fitting in my opinion.

I believe that gizmo is the thing I have inside the headlamp cowl, stuck to the side of my ammeter so I can see what's happening, charge-wise, at night. I've been recommending these devices for a couple of years.

Can't resist, *eek* have invested € 2.36 for a voltmeter (for battery control)
in addition to the ammeter the ignition switch and my load indicator LED.
Alreadiy at kick start, there is a significant increase in the voltage
