Hello,
Might be the camera angle, but it does not look like the magneto fiber gear is meshing with the cam gear. Might have to shine a bright light in there to look for teeth.
With the amount of puke inside that motor, I would remove the sump plate and do my best to clean out whatever I could.

Hi,
this bike seems less prone than my others
I can see what appears to be an anti wet sump valve in the oil line *????*
Derided by many including me *fight*

Well spotted John, if it was mine that would be coming out

I thought the same thing Lee, you can see that the pointier end of each tooth does engage ...should it be more pronounced than this?
I have had the sump off and it was quite clean which is what is keeping me optimistic despite the interesting 'bodges' I am discovering. I have changed filters and run a gut full of new oil through it already and will do again once this adventure has ended.
I am sure we have all had this experience when exploring new machines...it's part of the drug.

Ahhh...that is exactly why this post is thus named!
These are new to me. Can you please point out what I am looking for?
I am guessing your concern would be that it works too well at the wrong time?
-
Are you talking about that silver cylinder in the oil line? I wondered what that was!
Thankyou for that observation, I will be removing the valve (I will replace all the lines) ASAP.
If my bikes wet sump I blame myself for not finding them enough.

UncleD please tell me there are some WASHERS under the nuts on the oil pump or I will be forced to go to the pub if there isn't *smile*

The pub opened 14 minutes ago...you're late.
-
Come back Berger...I deceived you!
But thanks for making me check, the nuts were quite loose.
I replaced the washers.
-
great stuff UncleD I was sure I could see WASHERS --- [swarfy *whistle* *good3* *razz*] I even went back to the picture after you said I was late for the pub and thought that's a funny looking pump casting :o . back on topic again just for interest take the plugs out and spin the engine and see how your mag gear turns on a couple of revolutions, it looks interesting how those teeth are meshing, has the mag been badly slotted where the nuts hold it to the crankcase and its not fixed properly? *dunno2*
-
Bergs.....Looks like the drink has a hereto unexplained benefit when it comes to the eyes! C'mon UncleD.....Were there any washers behind those oil pump nuts? Or should Swarfy be booking up at Specsavers?
Swarfy.

I have not been to the pub! swarfy you're not setting my valve timing *bash* *whistle* -WASHERS!- you need to visit the pub , UncleD has removed the WASHERS and replaced them with shaken proof not stirred WASHERS! ;)
-
That photo showed the shakeproof washers that were in place (I couldn't see them either). I replaced them we new ones to ensure they bit...and then went to the pub looking for you...
(ie the Noonamah Tavern, Northern Territory) *ex* *beer*
The tips of the mag gear are black in colour and don't show up well (but you can see them silohetted above where they mesh in the photo). They do protrude into the adjacent gear but not all the way to the bottom.
-
No dammit, I can't go to sleep ( sorry dear, I'll turn the light off shortly).
HOW THE HELL CAN THE BIKE RUN WELL WITH ONE POINT GAP OF 0.09" AND ONE OF 0.19"??!
(You may need to read my parallel post in the electrical section).
Surely it should be running like a bag of poop? I JUST DONT GET IT! *pull hair out*
-
UncleD that's a better photo- looks ok to me, you are dealing with a Brit bike they even run with snapped cranks [well mine did] as for the points gap I can't point you in any other direction that hasn't been covered. my eyes might be good but they are not x-ray eyes even so I knew there were washers behind the nuts , I can hear the pub calling me *beer* *countdown*

Gear meshing.
This is how it looks on my A10.

G'day... It is a simple case of lulling you into a false sense of security. It knows!!! No, not really. This engine in its standard form will still run pretty well despite neglect and mal adjustment. This is why when set up to perfection the performance can be absolutely phenomenal. They really can move in mysterious ways, defying all logic. Treat it gently as you start to learn its foibles, reckon you have a winner there.
Just checked the wear pattern on an ATD gear...the mesh pattern is almost to the bottom of the fibre teeth, so either you have a bad or worn gear, or the maggy is fitted a bit too far back. The depth of mesh is acceptable for light local use, but not really reliable enough for highway trips. Try slackening the three retaining nuts and see if you can move the maggy a bit closer. The fibre gear is replaceable, fiddly to do. You need one with 44 Teeth if you go searching for another ATD.
Bergs, just heard from the pub...red carpet awaits. I am booking an eye test tomorrow.
Swarfy.

JulianS...that's how mine look...the black tooth tips are just had to see. Thanks to all for the attention though.

...I replaced the washers...
If you remove the pump; just in case you don't know: The nose of the oil pump needs a fibre washer under the body so that it is at the same level as the main part, that has a gasket under it. If it's not fitted, the pump body will get distorted.

Any recommendations for an auto advance fibre gear somewhere near Manchester anybody?
I'm desperate, and unfortunately Priory Magnetos are shut for holidays. *sad2*
Also, does anybody know the spec/size for the rivets please!
Thanks in advance chaps!
