Cleaned the bike today and found this after 600 miles.
Thinking back, i used all the correct bearings, except i ordered shielded on both sides- i am not aware of it if that makes a difference.
I omitted one dust shield when i built up the wheel.
I dont know if the sprocket or the axle may have been made wrong.
Everything is bottomed out tight, but i still have .070 free play.
Anyone else ever have this?

Hi Lee,
The right hand wheel bearing retainer will have loosened off
They are drilled from one peg hole through the hub for a small split pin (cotter pin in USA)
The pin hole often gets blocked when the hub is repainted
If a new retainer was fitted then a new hole needs drilling

Are you saying i need to back this bearing retainer out .070 to take up that slack?
I know for sure i do not have a cotter pin anywhere in the rear hub. Does anyone have a picture of where this pin goes?

Lee, the way I read Johns comment is that the retainer has loosened itself off and needs to screwed back in

Yes that was what I meant
Check each of the peg spanner holes for a radial drilling outwards through the threads
look inside the hub threads for signs of the drilling out through the threads
It can be hard to find
I had the same problem early in my A10 ownership and have seen it happen on other A10's
Loctite doesn't seem to work or didn't for me *sad2*

Tomorrow i will dig into this, i am positive i did not install a cotter so i guess that retainer could be rattling around in there.

I have not seen drillings for cotter in a full width iron hub, but they are a feature in the Ariel type hubs.

You were exactly right, the retainer had back itself off.
I could see no drilling in the hub or any pegs hole, so i prepped it and tried lock tite blue and seated it down tight.
If it backs off again i will drill and pin.

Having trouble seeing how the retainer spinning out causes a gap rather than a tighter fit.

RichardL I think because its the right hand retainer that has backed off probably allowing that bearing to move outwards towards the retainer, I am sure there is a better way of explaining this but I have got thick mode on today *whistle*--- I went to the pub *beer*

Dont feel bad, i had the same problem.
Where i showed the movement on the video, i now have a permanent gap but everything is tight and there is no free play.
I imagine if i made a spacer to go between the hub and the bearing i can get rid of that gap too.
Next time i am in there i will clear all that up.

I think I did something similar on my SA's 7" hub.
If my memory serves me right I made up a spacer over the stub axle to take up the play.
Don't remember either if I put it before or after the chainwheel bearing.
Should learn to take notes really... *dunno2*

I wonder if a spacer is missing here?
Have been removing and refitted the iron hub rear wheel for over 40 years and never come across this issue before.
The sculpted spacer which sits behind the hub bearing is about 0.1 inch thick and moves the hub/sprocket to the chain side?

No trouble understanding this as a possible reason fo the wheel float

I, too, will be watching for the answer to your question. Sometime in the (hopefully) near future my A7 rear hub will need to go together.

interesting observation Julian, is that washer supposed to create a "spring load" or something?? I'm just intrigued why its that specific shape (as opposed to "just" a spacer.....?? cheers
