I remember last year there was a world wide BSA A10 / A7 DGR ride... I registered my name last year and can't remember any details.. Does anyone remember it?
I have currently raised slightly less than its costing me to do the ride..but who cares? The riding is priceless..
Guy.

G'day Guy.
I can't recall anyone mentioning it this year. Unfortunately I won't be able to attend (will be severely hung over from my b/day party). Maybe GB or RichardL will see this and get it going.
Here is the link to your Kenya ride https://www.gentlemansride.com/rides/kenya
Cheers

Cheers Muskrat, Happy hangover for the 29th... I've registered on the DGR - I've ridden every year since it started - my question was to a world wide A10 A7 register of riders participating in the DGR.. I think it was Grey Beard or Richard who put me onto it last year.. I can't remember... I should search the posts...

I believe RichardL set up that international group for this forum. It's good to hear that you were enthused, but, the apparent take-up from forum members is very poor; it's rather disheartening!
I'm not sure if I will do the ride this year; I find it rather a rat race of mostly modern bikes racing past, leaving me in their smoke and getting lost! I gave up the ride half way through last year because I didn't know where the main peleton had gone. *conf2*
I also do not seem to get sponsorship from my fairly small group of friends and family. *pull hair out*
-
Thanks GB, I seem to remember you getting very wet as well... We are small group in Kenya - maybe 10 to 15 riders and start on Saturday with an over night at a bar or campsite depending on how much time you spend in one or the other... we aim to have a much fun as possible. Our ride concludes at the Kenya Classic car show - where there is also a bar... I will aim to be distinguished, but no promises... anyone is very welcome to join us.
I have an 80's BMW R80 GS that would make the trip and available

Good luck Guy. Will you post some pix?

will do!

I plan to ride, but so busy that I've not taken the time to set up a "World Wide Ride Team" for forum members. As GB has noted, the interest on the forum is basically pathetic and apathetic. I hate to think about how many of our 1107 members have been diagnosed with prostate cancer since we started talking-up the DGR. Anyway, if I get a chance, I might set up the team just to keep the flag flying, but not sure right now.

I will deffo be on the ride, even if A10 lets me down. Means alot to me on a personal level. The guy who organises it here at Bristol (UK) is a legend. It does cause some upset that people turn up with no sponsorship. However i try not to moan about that. The way i see it if i'm not prepared to go around with a bucket and guilt trip them to their faces then what's the point of complaining? Also am waiting for an invite to Musky's bash the night before so may be in a bit of a state!

In fairness, I reckon a lot of members are not reading the non-technical sections of this forum. So, are not aware of the plea to join the DGR. Many members may be DGRing without mentioning it here.

I've not mentioned it as I don't know if I'll do it this year simply due to the way I'm feeling . Trying to sort out my lack of energy /interest in things and the medicos seem to have nailed it,last blood test today ,so fingers crossed next week may be feeling brighter .Then who knows.

It's probably just the thought of your winter approaching. Remedy to ride as much as you can till then.
Good luck with the vampire today.

The BSA A7/A10 Forum Team is set up. Just search "forum" on the DGR website.
As I mentioned in my "The Most Technical Thing.." post, I believe DGR should require a minimum registration fee. This would help reduce the number of non-conforming bikes (read, "HD hogs") on the rides. I thought I'd share the text of my recent email with DGR admin:
Hi Richard,
Good to hear from you. No problem to change this. All fixed up now.
Regarding the minimum donation this is a very good point. We trialled it in 3 cities last year and expanded it to 25 this year to see the impact of it. So far it has been received very positively exactly for the reasons noted. Keeps the ride more manageable as it keeps the incorrect bike guys who don't donate anyway from signing up and also increases fundraising.
We will roll this out to Chicago and more cities next year.
Kind Regards,
Mikey Stojcevski

Mikey,
I hope you and Mark are well.
Late in the game and coming when you are very busy, but, per my request from the last three rides, can you change the ride name for BSA A7/A10 FORUM team to "World-Wide Rides"?
Now, to beat an old drum. I know I am just one vote, but my vote is for changing the policy to require a minimum donation for registration. I sincerely doubt it will seriously reduce the number of riders or event publicity. My friends on the A7/A10 Forum are complaining about their rides being overwhelmed by bikes that don't fit the description (new Harley hogs, for example), and the Chicago ride is no exception. That alone, I think, is not too bad until you realize that most of them have probably donated nothing.
🏍Here's to a safe ride for all!
Regards,
Richard
-
I'll motion this with our group too.. We spend a considerable amount in proportion to the funds raised with our support vehicle, preparing our bikes and over night accommodation etc, so a minimum donation seems reasonable if not mandatory..
We have a very remote official start point https://goo.gl/maps/nLuHdUoLMKu863vFA although we all meet a further 40 km down the in the desert at Magadi the night before, so no opportunists really to speak of..
Guy
-
Guy,
Yes, that would he a very remote start point indeed, from my perspective. Your ride, one way, is about 40 minutes longer than Chicago's round trip. Personally, with all the buildup, something longer seems appropriate, but it does leave time for lunch and a beer after.

That Flippin DGR website is crappo! I cannot find the forum team now!

Yeah, I've spent too much time trying figure out it's Long and Winding Roads, but usually end up finding what I'm looking for. In your case, just try the word "forum" in the search box, it should bring up four matches, one of which is us.

I fly back into the UK on Saturday afternoon. Hoping to be able to fit the dual seat that came with my (Guzzi) Loop frame Eldo so that my daughter and I can do the Cambridge ride on the Sunday.
As ever I am struggling with the DGR web site.

Unfortunately I am not able to join the DGR ride this year. I've made a donation to the A7A10 forum team. I hope you enjoy yourselves.

I think this link will take you to the team info and donation point.

I have joined and donated but still unsure of attending.

Chicago ride cancelled due to rain. Mixed feelings.

Bristol ride not cancelled despite rain and wind, also had mixed feelings but glad i went.
Still a big turn out which surprised me. Bumped into a forum member, Happy Henry, he's the chap with the 1950 plunger A7.

Well done jimbo.... alas no delighted to have made it to the finish face?
Is it fake news? The saddle rear on the C15(?) DGL looks a bit strange, almost a photoshop add on.
Nice to see Henry sporting a DG's garb and a Longstroke (plain timing cover) with a front wheel spindle that works, after his recent problems. This bike also appears to have the earlier tool box from a rigid frame, as detailed in posts earlier this year.
Congratulations to both of you.

Additional. Nice colour co-ordination, but a little flamboyant for my taste.

Hardly "flamboyant." "Dapper," and that's the whole idea.

Cambridge ride went ahead after a one hour delayed start to allow some weather to pass through. Had a few showers but mostly was OK. Lots of bikes, a good route and very well marshalled in difficult conditions. I took my Loop frame Eldorado this year, and after a brief unscheduled top at the side of the M11 for a minor adjustment all went well.

we had a case of sunstroke... other than that a fun day. My suit became bearable above 30mph..

Very dapper. It's always good to see a forum member, in the flesh.

Guy,
What great pictures. Fantastic to see the enthusiasm for the event in what is, to me, remote reaches. I take it the price of petrol is in Kenyan shillings per liter, so, I'm calculating $4.44 US/gallon. That's less than I expected.

First congrats *beer* *yeah* *thanks* to all who rode and THANK YOU to all who donated. KEEP IN MIND DONATIONS ARE STILL ACCEPTED for another 30-60 days or so? Plus merchandise!
Last year I registered with this group and rode (Sadly not a BSA) and I registered this year but didnt see this group or I would have lent support. I intended to ride a A65 BSA or the Norton Atlas but too many other issues going on,, life gets in the way.
Here is my take on things and a Portland Oregon ride report. (I will add photos next week).
We watched the weather closely, The PNW had the wettest/coldest Sept on record this year. Avg 1.5 inches of rain and this year nearly 5 inches. We also have snow in the hills at a surprising elevation and I live at the base of Mt Hood so halfway to the snow line. (My friend in Montana got 4 inches of snow at his place and sub freezing temps forecast for all this week!)
So, the weather service, Perpetual liars and cheats, Forecast rain for Friday & Saturday, but cloudy for Sunday So wife wanted to go to the cabin but I held out to stay for the ride. Saturday we got an epic storm and even a twister/tornado touched down as well as lightning strikes and monsoon rains.
Sunday AM Mrs Sluggo wakes me and says its raining buckets,, sleep in if you want. I did get up but got an email that they were considering delaying the 11 am start by an hour due to weather.
I did ride in bundled up in rain gear, Gave up on vintage and rode the Evo HD sportster as its steady and has crash bar. But roads were slicker than monkey Snot and was dicey all the way out of the hills into town.
I rode past the after party at the Jupiter Hotel (8th and SE Burnside) and saw a LOT of bikes and the street all blocked off,, rode to See See Coffee & MC shop and ride had already left. I knew the route so caught up partway thru. 335? registered,,, sadly few raised funds, About 200 showed up on bikes, no one knows how many rode yet,, but guessing about 100-125 rode. (Count me as 1/2) but many just rode over to the party instead.
A few people had minor crashes or slides,, one bike went down hard on a Manhole cover but crash bar saved the day. No one reported any injuries or serious damage. We have some industrial areas (lots of oil on the road) as well as trolley lines called "MAX" and those catch a lot of riders or slip on the rails..
There was only a few vintage bikes, most Asian,, I saw 1 HD pan, 2 Shovels, 1 Ironhead sporty. NO BSAs,, 1 Velocette, 1 OIF Triumph 750 and Cassie from TSS rode her 66-67 T100C so man up boys,, that girl rocks, and a vintage Duc, 2 Guzzis. 1 Norton Commando cafe,, Might have been more but thats what I saw.
There WAS some retro styled modern bikes, Several Enfields, and Urals with sidecars, and Triumph is a sponsor so LOTS of them, both retro style and sport bike and a few Adventure/Dual sports.
Locally there is not much push for vintage bikes on the ride but it works, But we get sponsorship from Ural of Portland, Triumph dealers and the Local HD dealer so the attitude from what I saw was just show up and ride.
PDX being PDX is ground zero for hipsters so its about style and a great vibe/party and many got to extreme lengths to dress up and put on a classy event. We got GREAT support from local radio stations and much free advertising. The 3 main people who organize are under 40 yrs old and to me represent the next generation of Bikers as well as community so I think they are great,, Unlike many of the clubs I am in with doddering old crazy guys bitching that young people dont care,, This is a very good endorsement for the future of motorcycles so Im on board. (Many clubs could learn some things from these youngsters)
MANY very attractive young ladies! I am impressed..!
I agree and try to shame/guilt/cajole others into not just registering but make sure you raise funds. I donated $40 myself despite near poverty right now,, And I got some great support from others including a great British bike shop in Calif donated $52! Known as CBS, or Classic British Spares, they are great and worth your support. See: https://www.classicbritishspares.com/
So, many people would have rode vintage, but left them at home because of weather, So I am okay with that. Also, the local organizers said they are going to ask the main org in Oz to see if we can move it up a few weeks earlier in Sept to accommodate many other rides that suffer from weather issues.
I snapped some pictures,, including some very attractive young ladies doing axe throwing. (A popular pastime now,, inexplicably) But we had some great vendors, from Ural, HD, Triumph, See See Coffee & MC, and a great new group of women riders called "The Torque Wenches" plus the axe throwing vendor and some others. We had a DJ, Raffle prizes that raised more money, Best dressed men and women and other contests. The Bar and restaurant was super posh and it was fun because many tourists including some from Japan and China were wondering WTH? Is going on as there was Motorcycles in the lobby and all these weirdos dressed up and carrying on. (Its a popular destination tourist hotel).
I need to download pix and resize to post here, but going to the cabin this weekend and will do so then and post next week. I thanked and chatted up the main local organizers, Chris & Jason and suggested as well a minimum donation scheme, as well as follow up group email blasts, Jason showed me someone has a excellent Drone and skills and filmed part of the ride crossing the downtown PDX Broadway bridge over the river. Movie quality. They said they will see about making the clip availible.
Ironically a helicopter was hovering overhead as well,, Nicholas Cage is filming a movie in Portland we believe it was the movie folks filming,, (Lots of TV shows and Movies film here.) However it might be the new TV show as well. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stumptown_(TV_series)
Here is 2 fellows from last years ride. Dump Truck was not there this year, He is a minor celebrity and paid commentator for Jack Daniels and other brands,, but the other fellow with the dark beard won best dressed this year. Also here is the same vendor as this year at last years event, the Axe throwing.

I hope you folks dont mind more nattering about our local Ride,, But just got an email before heading to bed on this very topic. I will post a couple pics of my own, But this young lady did a splendid job so she deserves the attention, (Lots of pix of the Mello Velo as well, she knows a classic when she sees one!) I scrolled thru and no "Which wanker is Sluggo?" this year as it does not appear I am in any of the pictures, but to be fair, The ride started without me (OH! The Temerity!) But I did catch up.
Anyrate, Here is her SmugMug page with the event pix she took, I hope the drone footage shows up and you can see some in the pics of Jasons phone.

And our laudatory congratulation from Chris, our regional ride leader.
" Portland Ladies and Gents,
You survived a cold and wet Distinguished Gentleman's Ride through the streets of Portland. Of the 338 riders registered for Portland I'm sure we had over 200 show up to ride in their dapper best - that in itself deserves a special honor. Thank you for supporting the ride either on your bike or from home with your donations. We raised over $22,000 for prostate cancer research and mental health programming with our charity partner the Movember Foundation - and there is still time to continue to donate.
I'd like to give a hand to our global sponsors who make this happen on a tremendous scale: Elf lubricants, REV'IT, Hedon helmets, Skram eyewear, and of course Triumph. Without these partners, the DGR would not be where it is today.
A big THANK YOU to our local ride sponsors. See See Motor Coffee Co. kept us warm with hot coffee and an excellent start. The Jupiter Hotel kept the party going with Hey Love and an amazing space to hang out and talk about the day's ride. And Latus Triumph provided needed support with a sweeper truck to make sure everyone made it home safe.
Our afterparty was one of the best ones yet. Local, legendary vendors really helped make the event great including raffle prizes and setups: Dehen 1920, Langlitz Leather, New Church Moto, Red Clouds Collective, Ship John, Ural Portland, Velomacchi and Wesco Boots. If you want them back next year go visit them and let them know. Our afterparty would also not be what it was without music and merriment. DJ AM GOLD kept the platters spinning, Widmer Brothers donated kegs so all alcohol proceeds could go to DGR and Portland Axe Throwing is always fun and a unique experience for our riders.
We had the pleasure of riding with the Mandalorians RC and Torque Wenches once again. Showing up and riding the route gets better and better and this event wouldn't be as smooth without your help. Special shout out to our volunteers Chelsea, Pod and Shahira who helped wrangle our raffle and Entercom radio - a few of you may have heard the DGR spots on the radio thanks to them!
Behind the scenes, you may have seen some photographers or drones out on the ride - making rainy Portland look good. Thank you to Shaylee King (https://kshayleephotos.smugmug.com/Gentalmens-Ride/n-fxj8cD/) and Patrick Guild. If you took your own photos please feel welcome to upload them to DGR Official at https://upload.gentlemansride.com/
Tag your social posts with #DGRPDX #DGRPortland and #DGR2019 - we'll look for a shared album solution as well so everyone can take a look.
The biggest thank yous go to David Mogg, Austin Foster, and Jason Deymonaz. Without you three this event doesn't happen at the scale it does here in Portland. You bring your passion for motorcycles and the DGR with you everywhere and it is deeply felt with every cheery handshake I get from happy riders on Sunday.
Finally, if you might take a moment to click https://forms.gle/wgA2GUyVaUANh9f6A we'd like to ask a few questions to be sure we're doing things right so next year can be that much better. If you have thoughts, suggestions, or wish to help please use the survey or hit "reply" as I'd love to see the Portland DGR be the best ride globally.
Ride dapper. Ride safe. Have fun.

I suddenly have an urge to throw axes.
Any tips? Like how do you get the sharp end to land on the victim target?

That is an epic ride there in Africa! Much respect, you should get special patches. I am sure the hipsters and pampered locals would enjoy some contrast. I was laughing at some of the Drinks at the Hotel bar,, they were charging $3.50 for Coffee and more for espresso or a Mocha,., but top of the list was a Cannabis infused CBD Hot Chocolate with a shot of Espresso for $8.50 which might be just the tonic for a Chinese tourist fresh off the direct flight and airport shuttle but seemed rather steep to me. I am still laughing at the confused tourists wondering what sort of hotel hosts bikers.
As to the axe throwing, Its a perplexing past time. I live up in the hills and a very long tradition of woodsmen and logging, and the little local town hosts a timber fest with chainsaw competitions, pole climbing, agility contests and yes,, Axe throwing and other challenges but the concept of making it a drinking establishment entertainment is rather odd.
There IS a technique and takes a bit of practice to master it. Seems to also be some debate on the finer points, At this point there is multiple places in the area who offer it and then the mobile service as well, They were not charging to do it at the DGR but accepting donations, but I see a variety of prices on different websites but there is a league,, like bowling or pool, darts etc, So I have no input other than everyone needs a hobby.

Basically, darts with axes. There seems to a lot of instruction available for throwing the ax but very little for catching it.

Portland looked like a lot fun..We have one mid 70's Ural around in Kenya.. I'll see if we can resurrect it for next years ride.. these events are great for getting people out of their boxes and talking, meeting etc..
-
Urals are a lot of fun! I worked at a dealership and was supposed to be taking care of their backlog of vintage bikes we called "The Dead guy bikes" as some people waited so long some died in the interim!
But my experience with the URALS was I was often pulled away from the backlog projects to lend a hand on the modern bikes (They sold Enfields as well, I liked the Electras!) So the older Urals were pretty crappy. Poor metallurgy, some parts were just junk and took a lot to keep them running even though built like a tractor. But they were cheap back years ago. Since then the factory has tremendously improved them and the modern ones are very reliable however they are no longer cheap to buy and priced accordingly. There is a core group of enthusiasts for them and some do GeoCaching which is scavenger hunts with GPS and they have parties up in remote areas and they give co-ordinates for a mountain top or canyon and you have to navigate to get there. Waiting is a keg of beer and a big party. With the local dealer as a sponsor. We got a bunch of the Urals showing up and they were ideal for the less than perfect weather.
In your remote area for some of your rides in Kenya,, a Ural would be an interesting machine to have, especially the models with the driven 3rd wheel. I have some friends with some and everyone wants a ride in them,
**** EDIT*** I just looked at all the photos again and lo & behold,, they did catch me in the background! Thats me in Red shirt, Blue tie and leather chaps (In light of the rain) Im at the Hotel desk talking to a tourist checking in asking what he thought about the goings on. He was perplexed and amused, First trip to Portland and ran smack into all of us nutjobs. Poor guy will always think this is normal. (Well its always weird,, thats our motto!)

I've just signed up for this year's DGR. Not the A10 through Edinburgh this time but the 1913 Douglas on a solo ride. Bet it rains!

I see their web site is still 3rd rate! Just spent 1/2 hour trying to register (5 times) to no avail *ex* They can see by my email address I've registered before. I've reset password twice but just get sent round and round. Not doing much for my "mental health" or the keyboard *problem*

I'v registered, but when I went to pay by PayPal It said there sight was not working just now???? so left it for a day and tried it again, it told me that I have already registered, couldn't see any where to pay so will just make a donation and hope for the best. *conf*

I've just been trying to register for a DGR ride local to me. I've logged on successfully. I've tried three times to register for the ride without success. That's it, I'm out of here 😕.
Is there a way to communicate with the organisers to tell them what I think of their crappo website?
-
I've communicated with them almost every year to get the forum team listed as "Worldwide Ride" and have a friendly relationship. I've also shared some of our members' frustrations, but not sure if that changed anything. Just try emailing them. They will likely respond to a civil exchange.

I've communicated with them almost every year to get the forum team listed as "Worldwide Ride" and have a friendly relationship. I've also shared some of our members' frustrations, but not sure if that changed anything. Just try emailing them. They will likely respond to a civil exchange.

G'day Fellas.
Yes the same as always. Tried to log in and register but just got the run around. They haven't improved the web site at all *pull hair out*
Cheers
I won't be able to ride as it's only 2 weeks after operation (I hope).

Just back from Bristol UK DGR. Great fun, probably 400 bikes . Somehow this bag of abused nails keeps starting and running bless it.

I rode 100 miles from home in Cornwall to Exeter to take part in the DGR. After the 25 or so mile ride I set off for my sister's house in High Wycombe. Total mileage today over 300.

I. too, did the DGR today. Nothing so ambitious as GB, with his 300-mile day. Rode about three minutes to the start point of the Naperville. IL ride from which we cruised around for about 15 miles on some too-familiar turf near my home. I was joined by a neighbor and friend who encourged to participate. I assured him he would not be thrown out for being on a fairly modern Harley. It's me in the picture.
