Title: Brian Crossman New Member
Post by: briancrossy on 19.09. 2019 13:46
hi all  My name is Brian and I live in Cumbria and have just got a 1949 BSA A7 Rigid to restore.Iremember the bike being complete and a fellow member of our bike club bought it 20 years ago and stripped it down to refurb the engine mainly but he has so many projects to do (car, boats etc)that it has just sat around so he said I could have it for what he paid.It has suffered a bit in them 20 years but nothing too major I hope. Will post the odd picture as and when I make progress .The frame has been painted and am just awaiting the front end from the powder coaters and all the stainless bits to get the front end together   Brian

Welcome, I’ve only seen one restored rigid a7, I was surprised how many parts are different to later models, there are two types of rigid frame as well (I think). Pictures would be great  ;)

Edit: I think some people think Cumbria is in Scotland.......

Just a note for future readers. Moderator Musky at first incorrectly added the Scottish flag to Brians signature. It has now been changed to the UK flag.

Hi Brian. You are not alone with your earlier A7 Longstroke...I am currently plucking up the courage to reassemble a basket case engine. This has several missing parts, so if yours is complete, you are in with a better chance. The early and late engines are similar design, with common problems, particularly as regards lubrication, so lots on the forum can be applied to your bike.

Welcome, keep us posted with your progress.

Swarfy.

Looking great. My cleaning container is an old square 5 gallon oil drum with the side removed. Please don't put modern tyres on the bike. Would the Miller headlight have a larger diameter with flat glass? I love the look of older motorbikes with those big headlamps!

Hi Brian
I had Avon Skidmasters on my Super Rocket and they were getting a bit old and hard so following a puncture on a club run I swapped to Avon AM26 (sorry Greybeard). I am impressed with the improvement in handling but remember that modern tyres need extra pressure due to softer rubber and sidewalls.
I fitted Dunlop K70s on most of my other bikes for the classic look, but these bikes are of lower performance than the SR so handling was not so much of an issue.

I agree about the AM26s. I fit them on all my bike over 250cc and find they improve the handling even on old Camels. GB is right about them not looking the part but what price safety. I don't bounce as well as I used to.

By the same logic, why don't you fit disk brakes as well then  ;)

I ordered a retro tyre today as I figured it wont see much wet weather hopefully and will be mainly used for work in the summer and shows and runs round the lake district. Can always change it if I am not happy.Picked up the crankcases and crankshaft and rear brake drum from the machinists today so once I get my new shells from Stafford will start the rebuild.
The tank arrived from India today and boy have i had fun!!!Was pleasently suprised only had to pay £21 tax.The petrol cap supplied fits good. The holes for the badges were full of paint but tapped out ok except one side the holes were slightly out so filed the holes in the badges a little bit to suit. Then one of the badge screws snapped so managed to drill out and re tap(heart in mouth moment i can tell you but managed not to slip with the drill).Ipolished up the brass taps from my old tank and they fit straight in with no problem once the correct thickness of fibre washer was chose.Had to file one of the holes for the plate that holds the kneepads on and fit the old pads for now till after stafford again.Any tips on how to fit the new kneepads easily would be appreciated i.e. washing up liquid,wd40?
The tank is fairly good for what it cost me and will do until i get the original sorted sometime

Hello, about picture posting, sent you a PM explaining to not click on 'insert image' when you use the forum 'Attach' function (uploading your own pictures).

The 'insert image' button is for linking to some picture on the internet, not for uploading pictures from your pc. If clicking on 'insert image' and not providing any link, you get the picture error symbol that appears in your posts (see pic1).

Use only the 'Attach' function. Will (as before :O) edit posts and remove those empty links:

(see pic2)

btw, one can put many pictures in one post, use the 'more attachments' function (see pic3).
Info on picture posting is in Forum Info & Help (https://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?board=15.0).
Any questions regarding pictures, post in that board. Thanks.

I have never used that button, (as far as I can remember)
