just a thing I came up with yesterday while playing in the shed. put the quadrant in the other way and it makes a really good locking tool to undo the nut. still got to get the better phone mastered for pics, and still waiting for the pub to open *beer*

On a related note ... how do I hold the small nut on the end of the kickstarter spring retaining screw? The way the nut is recessed into the cover, there is no clearance for a wrench or socket. Do I just jam a flat screwdriver blade in there, or is there a better way that is less likely to mar the cover?

it looks like someone has used the wrong nut, the correct nut is longer and the hex proud to accept a spanner . you could try cleaning the crud out and grinding down a socket or spanner. ps the kick start pin is in the wrong way

Unless you are changing the kick start spring there is no need to undo the nut
When removing the gearbox cover rotate the kiskstart lever down and swing out the clutch arm to hold it down. You can also leave the gear lever in place when removing the cover

Looking at an exploded parts diagram, Berger, I see what you mean about the longer nut and the orientation of the pin. I will correct that.
I'm working on a complete re-build. The kick start spring doesn't look very healthy, so I thought I'd replace it while I'm in there. On a positive note, the teeth on the quadrant and pinion look very sharp.

Tom. That nut is a locking nut for the setscrew, in other words the cover itself is threaded. If the spring still works, avoid a load of hassle and leave as it is. Spring looks like mine! Proper nut is machined to fill the circular location, with the hex easily accessible proud of the cover as bergs says. Packing washers might be a short term fix to move the existing nut a bit further out if you decide on the surgical route.

Yes, and I believe the term "oily rag" along with "barn find" increases the value four-fold.
