Hi , I have retired and needed a project to keep me out of trouble. In my younger days i had a couple of bike (AJS, Harley ,triumph) so here i am . New to the world of BSA , I have acquired a 1951 A7 Plunger, in boxes and started a rebuild project. I have started with the forks, and looks like i may need new Stanchions and bushes . The advice i need at the moment is the stanchions i have are 21 3/16 long but the only ones i can find are 22 1/2 long . I was told ,by the person i got it from ,that they are forks from the Gold Star as they are a better type.
The bike is a mixture of different models, the crank cases are 500 star twin, with the rest of the motor being 650 road rocket . So if anyone can help, I really want to know which ones are the right stanchions for the bike ? Will the 22 1/2 inch ones fit?

Hi Steve,
Get the new stanchions complete with fitted bushes as often the bushes need honing to size, The new top bushes will be longer so the fitted length of the fork legs should be the same,
The new legs will have oil holes that improve the action
There are lots of topics already on rebuilding/ shimming them

whats wrong with the stanchions/bushes Steve? it maybe better to "just" hardchrome/repair the ones you have if you know they fit/work with the other bits you have.....

Thanks for the advice ,i will look into getting them hard chromed . The chrome platers should be able to tell if the pitting is to bad . If I need to get new ones, I will make certain I get the bushes and stanchion are a set .

Hi Steve,
New stanchions even hard chrome ones are a lot cheaper than having your own re done
Hard chroming is a totally different process to decorative chrome and usually done to repair hydraulic rams.
