I have not started Emily, (451 EML) for many months. This morning I dipped the oil tank to check there was still a few inches in there. I backed her out of my shed. I always put her in first and use the clutch as a negative brake, (if I try to use only the front brake she skids across the hoist as the bike descends the ramp) .
As you can see, I gave the carb a good tickle and gently kicked her over. To my pleasant surprise, she started first kick. If the fuel was stale, she did not mind. Once again, I offer a little thank-you prayer to the god of refurbished magneto's.

Good idea of using the engine/clutch to stop the front wheel skidding when coming out backwards.
I find it easier backing mine out by sitting on the bike - bit more control, for me being a tiddler.

If I tried that my feet would be well off the ground.

She sounds really good GB. I painted some nonslip onto my ramp to stop the front wheel slide *smile*

That was great, Angus. Sounded so good I had to put in the second ear bud to fully appreciate it. Also, while maybe common, it was interesting to see someone else sticking their finger in front of the hole in the return tube to verify flow (and color, I assume).
I admire anyone who is organized enough to work on their bike in a small shed. During my current work on the barn-find A7, I've taken over my wife's parking spot in the two-car garage for spring, summer and fall. This in addition to the other half of the garage that I've greedily occupied for years.

My finger was momentarily blocking the oil return to force oil into the rocker feed.
I took the bike out for a long pootle around Warwickshire. The day was chilly but bright. The scenary was superb. The bike was superb. I've fallen in love with Emily all over again 😘
The only annoyance is the engine tends to flame out when I come to a stop and close the throttle too quickly. Ideas?

"the engine tends to flame out". Aviator speak if ever I heard it. Correct?

Just a phrase I picked up somewhere 😉

That was great, Angus.
I have no idea why I thought it was Angus writing, Neil.

One more thing. I watched again and noticed that you wiped your finger before poking into the tank. Yes, it's obvious you love her.

👍 You didn't see me sniff my finger though

*smile* getting my mind out of the gutter. Don't want crud from finger in the oil and smell it to make sure fuel isn't mixing in the oil right *????*
Cheers
