Often wondered why the RGS is held in such high regard. As far as I'm aware the GS and A series frames are almost identical, the only meaningful difference being different sliders to accommodate the GS front brake. Of course, there are cosmetic differences - eg exhaust, gauges, headlamp etc but does that really warrant the status RGS have achieved compared with the RR? Or there other substantial differences I'm not aware of? Hopefully those with more knowledge of those two models can enlighten me.

I've never understood the mystique of the RGS. Take a B31 frame and stick in a RR engine then add the other bits - as so many replica producers have done. Nowt wrong with a good old stock A10. They're a bit more comfortable too.

I've always understood the the RGS was a BITSA put together with a bit of panache to sell off all the redundent bits of A10 when BSA moved to unit construction.

Other way round
The A65 was no where near fully developed when it was rushed into production .
This is clearly evident by the 2 1962 catalogues, the early one with the pre units and the mid season with the units.
This is not what happens when a new model release is going according to plan
Attempts to tune the unit single & push up the HP ended up pushing out the left rod.
Thus for the hot rodders & speed freaks , an A10 engine with all of the time tested race bits tossed on.
Lest they try to get 11:1's to work in the short stroke A 65
