A 6 A one may be off-scale when the headlight is on and the engine is stopped or idling.

Does that matter to you?

Does that damage the ammeter TT?

The 6V system has an 8amp meter. I have never seen a 6amp one.

Me neither.
It's always struck me as weird and unnecessary that makers fitted the -12+12 ammeters on 12v systems where there are half the amps flying around  . . .  My bikes have a mixture of the things according to what I had to hand - by far the best being the (larger) white-faced Miller ammeters in my humble. Steady needles, and easy to read without my bins on!
