Title: Rear light
Post by: Rex on 05.06. 2022 11:12
Would a Lucas 525 be correct for a 1951 Star Twin?
Thanks.

My 1951 Star Twin has one now, but originally it had a round rear light (can't remember the Lucas part number offhand) and no stop light.
I fitted the 525 as my wife complained vociferously about how useless the original was and insisted I fitted something better with a stop light.
Better than having her Yamaha run into the back of me. ;)

G'day Rex.
My 51 A7 has the 480 with the open type number plate

If you want to retain some semblance of originality, there's a round one available that includes a stop light. Has STOP written across the lens. Have one on my M21

If it's the type I'm thinking of, that "Stop" type is usually seen on Vincents rather than BSA's.

Musky, the type you sent the link to, would that have been the type fitted originally?

The tail light with "stop" is a Miller item.
Listed for 1951 is the 480 or the 477/1 with stop light.

Thanks for a sensible answer Trev. I do have a 477/1 fitted at the moment but I've never been entirely convinced it was correct as it's never looked to be in-period of the early 1950s to me. It looks like it ought to be on a pre-war bike.
Still, if it's right it's right. ;)

Lucas introduced a more "modern" rear light in 1952, possibly due to impending change in legislation.

This type 529 was designed to replace the earlier lights and used the same mounting holes.

You can still buy them.

The Britax unit was just a pattern part of the Lucas 564

That's true (Velocettes as well) but who would ride around these days without a brake light? I made the suggestion because these units include a brake filament and at least are closer to orig spec than the rectangular type used on later models. I use one on my M21 for the above reasons - it at least looks 'in period'.

G'day Fellas.
When I first registered the A7 back in the early 80's it had the 480 without a brake light. The officer said it needed a brake light till I showed him the book which said in 1951 "brake light optional"! I have since fitted one below the tail light.

My old Austin Seven originally had only one rear light and no brake light. No headlamp dipping and no indicators obvs.
I fitted another rear light with double filament bulbs.
