Title: SORN query
Post by: Greybeard on 24.05. 2023 10:50
If a UK vehicle is declared SORN, (Statutory Off Road Notice) do you surrender the registration document and get a SORN slip instead?

No - it's just recorded on the dvla computer - usually takes up to 5 days to display.

Declaring SORN is simply a matter of making the declaration, most usual way is online, or by completing the form that reminds you your  tax is about to run out. Any road tax already paid is then refunded to the nearest complete month. So you lose out in favour of the DVLA. You retain the V5, the vehicle  SORN status is then recorded on the DVLA website for the world to see, and for ANPR to check and issue a penalty if that untaxed vehicle is clocked out and about. They must reap £££££.  A printed confirmation used to be issued, don't know if they bother these days.

As for keeping a vehicle taxed,  I pay a little bit more and do it by monthly direct debit. It's a bit of a creaser giving the DVLA a yearly or 6 monthly windfall. I'm a great believer in Pay as you Go, rather than money up front. We all know what a little empire  and cash cow the whole business has become.

I'm expecting a berger rant as to our elected representatives and their hands on our throats.....

 Swarfy.

A few years ago I SORN'd our old Fiat Panda and put it in my sons garage. I now cannot find the registration document. I just wondered if we might have had to surrender it while the car was off the road. Thank for the refresh.👌

Swarfy a rant it is , i never got the log book for that pesky van i bought maybe because the feller i bought it off didn't send in the big part of the log book but gave me the slip for taxing it. when i applied to DVLA for a log book i sent in the slip with the V62 form and ticked the box saying i am not paying a £25 fee. i got a letter back saying i had left it too long and i must pay the £25, they were saying something about the slip i taxed it with was no longer valid , i sent them a nasty letter complete with the £25 telling them in no uncertain terms that they had let me tax this van TWICE with there so called invalid slip , as we know they just want maximum ££££££'s from us . *bash* ::hh::
