Title: A10 SPEEDOMETER

Hi all. I am wondering if anyone can help me. I would like to know what serial # or model # or anything # when looking for an original smiths speedometer for a 1951 A10 Plunger. Im looking at a few on ebay and not sure which way to go. Regards Ian

Hi Ian, the bike looks good, well done.

I am pretty sure the speedo you want is a  S546/3/L  this will be printed on the dial. It might be worth checking with a instrument repair specialist as there may well be others that are the same ratio etc and can be used.

Brian, Im looking at one on uk ebay at the moment. Its number is S608/11. I wonder if that will do? any ideas? ian

Ian,
 Any chronometric instrument can calibrated to suit any machine .All the different dial faces are readily available new,quite cheaply (maybe £15.00 ish) from the specialist restorers. Last time I visited Dave Woods he had seemingly hundreds of different dials on nails on the wall of his workshop and he knows what they all fit.
 So dont waste time searching for a correct serial number on an old one from ebay or an autojumble.
 A speedo can become a rev counter. A "D" shaped bantam speedo can be built up to be a 5" Vincent rev counter (this will be rather more expensive though) if thats what you require.

Ian,
         You will need a speedo with a ratio of 1450 revs per mile, if you have standard gearing.
You will also need a very fat wallet!
