Hi all,
Just wondering as I have not done it on this bike before, how to adjust the timing on an a10 flash. It is too far retarded and needs to be advanced up. It is the reason for my lack of top end go.
Cheers
Hubie.

http://www.britishonly.com/pdf/bsa/sectionA_BSAservicesheetno203.pdf The main thing is to take your time. If you get it right first time then you will be lucky. All the best

btw, the manuals are here (http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php/topic,454.0.html), the service sheets here (http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php/topic,1475.0.html), Lucas Manuals here (http://www.a7a10.net/lucasmain.htm), Search tips are here (http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php/topic,1352.0.html).
Good luck, you'll soon get your ignition timing perfect.

Thanks so much for the info, it's definately the cause of my lack of go at the top end. I have a mate who runs a shop here in Oz who did his apprenticeship with Triumph in the UK 40 years ago and knows brit bikes very well. He told me when I went there lastnight following a tyre blowout that my timing was too far retarded so it is time to sink my teeth into it and correct the problem.
The difference in power and torque between my flash and my super meteor is massive at the moment and it should not be so obvious.

The Flash shouldn't be too far behind the Meteor. Mine argues with an Atlas. Might have to take some of your own medicine re pinging thoughts.
Cheers mate.

Reset the timing tonight, thanks to the instructions given it wasn't a difficult job. Set it to the factory reccomended 11/32 btdc with the points just starting to open. Fired into life immediately but will have to wait to ride it as it is 10pm here and we've had massive hailstorms. Both of my cars appear written off.
Will report on the progress and thanks to all for the great advice.

Thanks for the feedback, always nice to read about good results and a running engine.
(but sorry for the car mishaps!)

Both cars "written off" - yowch!

Now all I need to know is which direction advances the timing, nearer to TDC or more BTC. Will need this in case I need to advance it more. At least it is easier to adjust than my super meteor!

G'day Hubie,
Shame about the cars, hope they were insured.
To advance the cam ring needs to go in the opposite direction to the points plate spinning. If you only want to go a little opening the points advances and closing retards. One thou is about two degrees of timing.
Advancing means the spark happens earlier. eg 3/8" btdc is more advanced than 5/16"btdc.

Thanks muskrat,
So the more btdc, the more advanced. Now I just have to ride her!

Finally got the chance to take her out. With iridium plugs and reset timing, goes like a cut cat compared to before. Much happier.

Now that I have the timing sorted, I've also reverted to more original carb settings as my plugs were quite black. Dropped from a 270 main jet to a 210 (manual says 170 but I don't have one) and the needle clip is in number 1 position. Will see how it goes, at least I am having fun!

Now goes like a cut cat without being over rich. Happily have it sorted now and loads of torque, plenty of power left at 60mph.
Cheers for the help and advice.
