Title: What's Become of You?
Post by: RichardL on 23.08. 2011 03:39
Hey, just to be sociable, if you've been a member for a long time but haven't felt the urge to chime-in in a year (or like that), maybe just say "hello" so we know you are well or, at least, hanging in there. Nothing  official here, just feeling like we're losing touch with some good people.

I'm still here. I check (unread posts since last visit) on this forum most days just to keep up with whats happening. I dont have much time or money lately to restore any of my bikes but there will come a time when that will happen. I ride my 1947 A7 on a daily basis and love it.

Well, i`m still here too, although i`ve been a bit busy these last few months moving house and re-locating to west devon. I am currently converting an old sheep cott into a home for my A10, so i can finally ride the great roads around here which seem to have been made for an A10  can`t wait!

Richard,

What will you do with the sheep? I believe riding those roads must be great and I am continually in the "grass is greener" mode when it comes to comparing riding here with about anywhere else,  though, there are some nice spots. I think it must be totally accurate to say the bikes were made for your roads.

Stephen,

I think your engine is in good hands.  Happy riding,  when the time comes.

Good to here from you guys.

Hi guys, I am still here too, my A10 restoration is still on hold and in storage until we get moved into another house after the earthquakes destroyed ours. I read all posts every day and take great interest in any new mods that I will be able to include when the time comes. We will be on holiday in Aussie first two weeks in Oct (sunshine coast Queensland) if any member is close I would love to drop in to say hi, cheers,Bob

As you can see from my previous post on the old pinking thread I am still about, Richard from Minety, my Super rocket is still going well and hopefully will be taking me to the I.O.W british bike rally iin September.
The electric start is still working A1 over a year now!
I have not ridden much this summer due to lack of time, the haymaking season is over than goodness, also our French bulldog had 5 puppies 8 weeks ago talk about time wasters, it goes in one end and comes out the other, at my age trying to round them up after giving them the run of the garden is difficult, the drawback is that only one is sold, just hope it does not stop me from riding to much before the bad weather sets in.
The BSA 350 unit single special bitza I am building has come to a halt at present as well due to lack of time and I still have a trailer of auto jumble to unload and put somewhere after not getting rid of it after Bill Littles open day jumble.
rest assured I pop in from time to time to read the posts

Hi Guys

I have arrived back in OZ from UK (4 years), and are now back in our home in Canberra, The BSA arrives Sept 11th. I will be doing a "dummy" rebuild first to see what if anything is missing (this bike was purchased in pieces, and boxed). Then will strip it down and do a concourse rebuild, i will keep everyone up to date by the number of question i will be asking.

Well, I had something to post up, sort of 'There's an idiot in the garage' Part 2 but was too embarassed. However, I've had a glass of wine so feel I can handle it now....
I was resetting my tappet clearances after tightening down my rocker box fixings, you know the way it goes...oil weeping from the box joint and the first reaction is to squash the gaskets down tighter which then needed the tappets reset since the fixings tightened down quite a bit and calamity, I dropped the tappets' allen key down the push rod tunnel.
I couldn't see it so went fishing with my little magnet on the end of the telescopic thingy but no luck, it kept 'sticking' to the SRM push rods. So I bent the end of the telescopic thingy to get further away from the push rods to where the key must be and snap, I broke it while bending it.
So, eventually I had to lift the rocker box off to retrieve the key. Now you all know that replacing the rocker box is a pain, and it was.
Glad I got that off my chest!
Apart from that she's going well.
Alan

adm - BSA forum -

I'm still here - have just been busy - I enjoy your website & am sorry that I haven't contributed much.  However, I still do have my 63 RGS (Best in Show at 2009 Mid-Ohio Vintage Days - also have a 2nd A10 RGS that was a Dick Mann bike - both bikes in pretty nice condition.  I still haven't taken the time to sort out my dual carb problem on the RGS.  Too many projects, work and just never enough time.  But retirement is coming up next year, so that should help.  I have a garage full of old bikes that need my attention - - and I look forward to spending some time there.  Thanks for your reminder to say something.  I'll try to do better in staying in touch.  JB Louisville KY

This thread is going well. Welcome back to all of you.

Kiwipom, Yes, I recall when you posted about the quakes, glad things are looking up for you.

Rich, After Googling them, those look like great dogs. You must be up to your ears in dog ears.  There have been a couple of times this season when I wished for an electric starter, but don't know if it would have just meant a dead battery.

Pato, Wondering if a "dummy" build is common or if most folks don't just do like me and fit-as-you-go. Maybe that's the real dummy build. Anyway, are you missing the UK or glad to be back in Oz. If I recall from reading about it, Canberra may not be the tourist and cultural center of the world. No offense, I hope.

Alan,  Sounds frustrating. In hind sight, maybe a flexi/grabbi claw tool and a bendy mirror to see your way might have worked. Though, with the luck you were having, the mirror would have broken off in the hole.

JB, ah, another member in thinkin'-'bout-it distance from where I am in the Chicago area. Been meaning to get to the Mid-Ohio, but it's always a challenge ('tain't around the corner). So, does it help to have Domiracer in your backyard? Their lack of photos is frustrating.

Regards all,

Richard L

I'm still around and get the A10 out on a semi-regular basis. I finally had it flat-out on the highway, saw a bit more than 90 on the speedo (around here that's dangerous territory) and hardly anything fell off, so there was that. Here's a guy riding what looks like my A10 and who looks a lot like me, except I cannot reconcile that anyone who lives around here would leave for a ride in May without his rain gear, which might explain his expression given how soggy he is.  ;)

Hello there, RGS man here.
Now back on the road, just about sorted, running really well, sore wrists from the clip ons. Few oil leaks here and there! really teed off, the new carb I bought from Amal in the uk is not functioning as it should. When tickled, petrol spews out of the top of the tickler, goes all over the motor, it only stops when I thump the float bowl with a hammer!! (very lightly I must confess) taken it apart, but still cant cure it.
Other than that, really enjoying it, brings back memories of my your when I had a Rocket, funny though, I dont remember having as much vibration in those days!

Regards  Mark

Hello folks.

I have a low mileage 1955 plunger Golden Flash A10 'mouldering' at the back of my garage patiently waiting for me to restore her.

I got the BSA in the early 70's as part payment for an Ariel Square Four that I had bought for £60 without a Registration document. The Square Four was a 1938 4G model with rigid rear end and girder forks, like this one, only not so shiny http://tinyurl.com/3mb8dzo.
Someone had made a start on doing the bike up but it was not running. After stripping paint from the front number plate I was able to make out the rusted outline of the original registration number. I asked the DVLC for a replacement logbook hoping that the bike had not been stolen. They sent out an inspector who told me that the bike had not been taxed since it was two years old! My theory was that the owner had been killed in the war and the bike had not been used since then! I never managed to get the beast to run; probably a weak magneto. Anyway, I put an advert in Exchange & Mart and got £60 cash plus the A10 in exchange for the Squariel.
I soon had the Beeza looking really nice. I replaced the sidecar ratio rear sprocket for a solo one and really enjoyed riding the bike. It looked gorgeous. I was very proud of it!

One day in about 1975, while the bike was on its centre stand outside my house an idiot in a car reversed into it and knocked it over, smashing the headlamp and denting the headlamp cowl. I was heartbroken and have not ridden the bike since then.

However, now I'm retired I intend to get the BSA going again. I just need to get a few things cleared out of my garage and then I'll make a start.

It's going to be expensive; I'll need wheel rebuilds, new exhaust system, new tyres and tank replating. I am able to do the mechanicals and paint myself; I used to be a car and motorbike mechanic.

I'll try to remember to keep in touch with this forum.

This is an interesting subject, nice to see some not so well known names. (I shouldn't be here, I bother the forum too much)

Maxwell - no one should be allowed to ride an A with a scowl like that - have his licence taken from him and give the bike a good home.

Octane - I vote you are to be renamed Salty

If it helps, I still haven't dried out, and that was mid-May! Someone else got a shot of me that's even worse a few minutes later, I look like my dog just died. ;)

Hi

I am still here. The Goldenflash is in good condition and I haven't ridden it much because of the poxy weather and also because I treated the wife and I to some long trips abroad after retiring.

I have a lurk into the forum about once a week.

Still own and still ride the A10.  Mainly just short rides through the canyons in Southern California.

Glad to hear most folks are doing well.

Glenn,

Good to hear from you again. From the picture, I was thinking it was on the way to the Rock Store out by Malibu canyon, but see by your older posts you are in Orange County. I looked up Cooks Corners. Can't say I've been to Trabuco Canyon, but I somewhat know the area, being from the San Fernando Valley and touring around the Laguna area. The Irvine Hilton was one of my sound projects when it was built but it's owned by some other chain now. I just wish I had my bike in So Cal right now so I could enjoy the canyon runs, which are few and far between here in Chicagoland. On the day that someone made a left in front of me back in '79 (think "right" if you happen to drive on the left), I was returning from Malibu beach (via Malibu Canyon) to my home in Studio City. I bet that all sounds familiar.

I am still here!  I lost the link to the forum a while back and have been trying unsuccessfully to relocate the forum.  It has been very hot in Texas this summer (more than normal) and I haven't ridden the Super Rocket since late July/ early August.  We have the first rally coming up in two weeks, so I will be cleaning the carb, changing fluids and general tune-up stuff.

I hope all is well with everyone.

Hello, RGS man here,
Just spent last weekend in Albany, Western Australia at the vintage and veteran hillclimb. My young fella broke the commando getting it off the trailer, so it meant we had to share the Beezer for the weekend, had a poker run on the saturday, camped at the Albany rifle club, bar etc was cheap, beer was good, and there were about 50 + there overnight. Rode up to Mt Clarence on the Sunday. Silly me , I expected a load of old fellas nursing their old bikes up the hill. Well, was I mistaken or what!! Everyone was giving every bike there (100 entries) a damned good thrashing, there were some lovely old bikes there doing some very good times. good curvy course, we had a bit of rain as well, bit of a paid, but soon dried out. The beezer god a really good work out, thrashed the bum off it, really performed well.(apart from that blasted RRT2), note must put a srambles 'box in for next years event! The bike kept up with most things, and was reasonably quick, once 40mph was arrived at anyway. Good times.

Cheers all,  Mark

Mark,
Put the RRT2 on the shelf for pose and fit an STD box.
Mine has an STD box in it as the RRT2 was worn out and now lives elsewhere.

hi Trev,
Yes, I reckon you are right!, there was a bloke at the hillclimb with a 500 goldie (takes it out once a year, for this event) he had a scrambles box, went really well on it too. But I think a STD one would be better, there are a couple on ebay at the moment, I will keep an eye on them.

Still around, the Shooting Star has a couple more stablemates which need some attention plus buying a lathe and mill at an auction has resulted in a long project to restore them both. Plan is to have them finished before retirement. Well said, helping is what the forum is all about. And of course show off ones work, bike, travels etc.
+ to have someone to tell about the quest for that perfect crank endfloat, or discuss the gearbox 3rd gear whining & the intermittent L side misfiring magneto cause, none of which the wife or coworkers will be particularly interested in :O)

Very nice bike, Ian.

And members who have not posted lately are always welcome to add to this thread.

I'm a year off seventy and with the help of my titanium anti sump valve I'm sure I could do idiot-overs if I had a trampoline, would take a bit of practise mind as I've never done them before.
A group of about 14 of us attend "Healthy Living" once or twice a week (circuit training designed ot increase heart rate to more than double for twenty minutes or more), you have to of had a heart op or treatment to attend, the thing is our little friendly group are all active, non of them overweight by much and have I reckon more to "look forward to" than most of the fat middle aged lumps waddling to the super market tills supported by their trolleys (no wonder the damn things wont steer).
I had a heart murmur for twenty years without any problems except for the last two years spent gasping for breath, so my message (hope it didn't sound like a rant) is -I'm not having a pop here at anyone but if any you guys have heart problems or get short of breath, get in to the Docs and if you need an op I can tell you it is a very easy op, you will have two days discomfort for which you will need and get pain killers, you'll be back home in less than a week from then on it's about protecting your chest as it knits together(if they had to go in there), but heart wise the improvement is immediate, like the SRM pump it's fit and forget *smiley4*

better to look forward than look back in anger - see what I did there

Well bugger me if just after posting that, I headed up the street for a feed on the treadly, and slowing up for a sharp left hander, gave the savage front brake a little too much and went idiot over- the bars..... *eek*
The distance from the ground through the axle to the seat increases as one is rotating over the friction point, and combined with the force at a tangent to the arc, pretty much....hurts... *smile*.. but I'm here to tell.. *smile*

If I hadn't had the hard hat strap to do up with the left hand as the corner approached, would've all been good.
That was the second time in three weeks, but the other time was a knobhead pulled out of a shopping centre on a scooter, through a stop sign- then stopped in my path. *conf*
anyway Pedro, as I said hang in there and get good soon, your new seat arrangement needs holding down *smile*

Dutch,

Glad you're OK (it seems), though I'm not sure I was able to follow your physics thread. Assume it's just road rash and bruises, since you didn't mention the hospital. So, are we to take it that you were fussing with the helmut strap when the turn came and was unable to clutch for a downshift, so went too much on the brakes?

Feel better soon.

Bill wouldn't have taken you for 70 ,your positive outlook on life does you credit ,I'm 62 and still playing squash twice a week ,though not as well as I used but it keeps the weight down and I'm determined to keep rididing as long as I'm still able.( and safe ).
Dutch ,arseovers without benefit of trampoline not recommended but as pilots say "any landing you walk away from is a good 'en"

Re the picture Pedro , a story came to mind about the motorcycle mech and his cardio -vascular surgeon client ,whilst the surgeon was picking up his expensive bike after some engine work the mechanic mentioned that has he did most of the same things to his engine as the surgeon did ie replace valves and internal plumbing etc  he should get the same rate of pay has the surgeon ,who, after a moments thought and not wishing to upset the mechanic  agreed saying well yes  up to a point but tell me ,could you change a valve with the motor still running ???
best wishes BobH

Re:(the picture Pedro , a story came to mind about the motorcycle mech and his cardio -vascular surgeon client ,whilst the surgeon was picking up his expensive bike after some engine work the mechanic mentioned that has he did most of the same things to his engine as the surgeon did ie replace valves and internal plumbing etc he should get the same rate of pay has the surgeon ,who, after a moment’s thought and not wishing to upset the mechanic agreed saying well yes up to a point but tell me ,could you change a valve with the motor still running) ???
best wishes BobH

Hi guys, BobH, nice story about the heart surgeon however when relaying the story to my daughter who is a theater nurse she tells me that the account is not quite right. She tells me that a `Perfusionist` monitors a machine that is hooked up to the patient and takes over the actions of the heart where blood is pumped from the body to the machine and back while the patient is laying on an ice cold bed as the heart has to be very cold at the time of operation. After the op the heart has to be `shocked` back into life to get it going(kick started)just like the bikes, cheers

Melville,

I'm anxious to get started, but no real opportunity yet, other than ebay for a couple of parts.

So, what does "Among the the redwoods" mean townwise? Somewhere between Santa Cruz and Crescent City, i take it.

In the college town closer to Crescent City.  There's no hurry on these things--I had my current bike three years before I got to the "putting stuff back together stage" which took another couple years.

Hi all,

I'm still here but have been very busy.  Have demolished my home, started building a new one while living with in laws (don't ask!) and all but one of my bikes is in storage.  That said, all is well in BSA land here.  My good old girl gets started weekly when I visit her and still runs like a swiss watch.

A little off topic, have come across a B50SS from a deceased estate i've been helping get ready for sale but would like some info on it if anyone here can help confirm it's identity.  Numbers are as follows:

B50SS/KG01596

Any idea as to value would be awesome as well. (t's very tidy and runs great).

Cheers,
Hubie.

Hello Hubie,
good to hear your still alive !

As far as I can work out the B50 was built in September or 1971, both engine and frame numbers should be the same.

Value is always a difficult question as it very much depends on conditon etc but if its reasonable and goes well I would have a guess at around $5,000. I had a friend who sold one only a few weeks a go for that amount and it was a very tidy bike.

I dont have one but my mate who does really likes it. If its a tidy original bike and you can buy it for a fair price then buy it. After you have owned it for a year or two if you decide you dont want it you will make money.

Hi folks,
I haven't been on the forum for at least a year or two I'd say.
Was going through a tough time financially and thinking I would have to sell my beloved. A10. Thankfully things have improved and I hope to be keeping the old girl, and to be road legal and riding in the very near future, and I hope to get more involved in conversations on this fantastic forum. To be honest I will be mostly asking for advice as I am very much a novice, being only a young boy in the distant heyday of classic bikes.

Ps I was working in Minety last week and I heard what I was sure sounded like an A10 and I couldn't believe it when I found I was correct on passing it parked a few minutes later. Delighted with my self that although I'm a novice I was able to recognise the lovely distinctive sound. The bike owned by Richard from Minety I guess? Made my day.

Keep well and stay safe, all

Best regards- Dave G *smiley4*

Hello All,

Am still loitering around and picking up plenty of tips from your fine forum!

My A10 rebuild is making some progress at last and hope to be kicking her into life before too long. Where've we heard that one before?

I bought the bike as a roughly restored non-runner and have pretty much rebuilt everything. A lot of it was wrong or knackered... It's a '58 Golden Flash but it came with an alloy head so I thought I'd keep it, with new flat-top pistons fitted. It's my first full rebuild so it's taught me a lot about how british bikes go together. I also have a B40WD on the road, my first british bike. That's taught me a thing or two as well.

Luckily I'm good mates with Beezermac who has been an invaluable help with advice, encouragement, parts and help with tricky jobs like the timing side bush, mag and anything else I bottle out of.

I also receive regular support and abuse from the Cheshire Branch of the BSAOC, a great bunch with a vast amount of knowledge.

Bye for now, Paul.

I might be around more this year if things go to plan. Since I moved to Hungary in 2011 my '48 A7 has been off the road and there has not been much incentive to do anything with it, as it is stored in a very dark building with no electricity. I should be moving to Croatia in the spring and it can then go in a double garage with lights and power. I might not have time until the winter but as a minimum I intend to rebuild the engine. I've had the bike since 1995 and the engine has never been apart, so it has never had any sludge trap attention! Regrettably this work will be in preparation to bring the BSA back to UK and sell it. In Croatia you can only import vehicles under 12 years old.

http://laurence.swain.me.uk/about.html Well, this the address of his website, and there are contact details on it. I have heard through the grapevine that he has lost interest in motorcycles. However, he still has his bikes as far as I know, but no longer rides them. The website is worth a visit in it's own right, there is some very interesting reading to be had about LJ's various motorcycling exploits.

For those who wonder how JulianM & The beast are doing, I have been visiting him last Saturday.
He is still alive and kicking and the place is filled with all kinds of cars from a couple of MG-T series over Alfa Romeo family cars to Bentley and Lagonda racing monsters all in various states of rebuild.
Regarding bikes, there's a nice BSA triple, an unrestored Gold Star scrambler, an Ariel, a couple of Norton's,Laverda's a Triumph Bonneville he's using as a commuter bike and some more
In his spare time he is building a Laverda twin racer with a special enlightened frame and engine with modified "squish" combustion chambers.
The beast is going to get upgraded with a TLS front brake as he finds that the standard 8" FWH is no match for the engine (why am I not surprised...?)
To be continued...

I felt cheated when Julian disappeared off the A7A10 radar. We were all following the build and hoping to see videos of the beast. I know he got involved in his own business and I understand he had other priorities, but, I felt rather disappointed. I'm sure other members must feel the same.  :-\

G'day all.
With everything in life circumstances change, life gets in the road, friends come and go. I only have two school friends that I see regularly (once a week).
There's been a few "special" builders come and go. Dan Daughenbaugh building the A7 salt flat machine and Briz building the A10 salty. just had a look at his site and there's mention of the forum.

"The guys on the A10 forum were super helpful.
One guy-Julian-who restores Lagondas for a living is building a street scrambler A10 has made his own billet crank & barrels. He offered to help us with cylinder drawings.
Another bloke, Muskrat, had a twin-carb ally head. Wanted to swap for a 4-spring clutch. Only problem, he's in OZ! But then Julian stepped in again and offered to send a spare clutch of his to Muskrat who could then send us the head. How generous was that? He wont even let me pay shipping."

Hopefully one day they might venture back to say G'day.
Cheers

It's been quite some time since I've been active here. Until this week, I hadn't done anything with the BSA in several years. Got sidetracked by a few other bikes that were more complete and easier to get on the road. A 1959 Velocette Venom, 1972 Norton Commando, and a 1973 Triumph Daytona. All running now, so finally back to the A10.

And on that happy note, when out for a group ride on Sunday last, a mate with a nice A10 special he's had for donkey's years lost it on a patch of diesel and went down at about 30mph. Left him with a badly-scuffed bike, a broken thumb and a dislocated shoulder. Worst of all (he says) it mullered his chrono tacho.
Got home and was reading on the Panther forum about a regular contributor there who also had an accident on Sunday. He was riding his Panther combo, had some sort of accident (currently too ill to say how it occurred) and ending up losing his foot. That night in hospital his lower leg was also removed.
You just never know if/when it's your turn... *eek*

I am a solitary person by nature. When I was a boy, I'd go off and have adventures alone. Maybe having you chaps available but at arms length is perfect for me. I enjoy having time to myself; which is not very easy being married owned for 51 years.

It's a little remembered factoid that it was me who first suggested having some way of recognising another A7A10 forum member at a bike meet; hence the branded teeshirts etc.

Judging by the lack of pickup for the DGR I don't hold out much hope for a forum get-together
🙄

GB, I'd be well up for a meet, especially if there is camping/alcohol involved. Only available every other weekend though (me not the alcohol, you can get that anytime, just find a "petrol station"!!!)
You know my neck o the woods, if you're ever over this way hit me up.

Just a note about the forum whearabouts if I were to be MIA and taking my final ride to the eternal realms (or be reborn in Tibet or something), Muskrat gets regular backups of all forum files, gives the ability to reconstruct a complete working forum. Only some recent topics\pictures would be missing + some offline time would be expected.

It would be great to meet up I have so many people to thank. I agree it is doubtful. Tee shirts sounds a good idea. Every time I see ab A10 or A7 I can’t help having a look and a chat if I can.  We mostly ride in good weather so tee shirts sounds appropriate.

Happy to help this happen.  If it was linked to a charity it could make the payment process easier and make the world a better place.

The tee-shirt is already available, (still, I hope);  have a search of the forum.

Hi guys

Just to let you know I'm still here, just dealing with busyness in life at present.  Been down to see Russell Smalley in Notts to get speedo looked at - need to go down again this weekend (possibly) to get another niggle sorted out.  Will be back online proper just now.

Take care guys, ride safe.

Hiya fellas, just to let you all know I'm still around and fighting my way back to health.  Had three months off work so far with two more to go - hopefully will be back to full strength for the summer (Long Covid and a bit of PTSD following hospital).  I'm thinking of taking early semi-retirement (want to keep working at something) but not sure which direction to go in at the moment - depends on whether the energy levels return to normal.

The bike is pretty much ready to go, although some attention is needed for one of the lower fork legs where the thread is poor on the clamp arrangement.  Had to do a temp job last year to get out on the road but not really happy with how it is at present.  Will definitely consider changing it to a stud arrangement to preserve the internal threads.

Let me know the news where you are guys, it seems ages since I was on the site.

Cheers

Hya, I'm glad you are still fighting the good fight. I hope you get to ride your Beeza this year.

Me and family are doing OK. My son got a dose of Covid but pulled through quite quickly. No riding at the moment, roll on spring!

Bergs mentioned Alex Kettle too??

By the way, if I suddenly went MIA, Sue is under instruction to put a message on this Forum if it's serious - or PM and she'll pick it up from there.

Let us know about Mitch, he was quite a prominent poster.

I've not been on here much since I moved to Hungary in 2011. I took the A7 with me but have not had it road registered, so have only ridden it on my own land. I did have a little Suzuki trail bike in Hungary for a while but since I moved to Croatia in 2018 I've not had a bike on the road. The rigid is not ideal for me these days as I suffer with a bad back. I want to tidy up the BSA and sell it but I wanted to first check the sludge trap, as I had never had the engine apart since I got the bike in 1995. I should have done the work before Brexit as it is now much more difficult to get stuff from UK. I was recently in UK for a social visit so I did get a set of piston rings but could not get a gasket set, as Draganfly were out of stock. The oil rings were stuck in their grooves and broke when I tried to get them out. I was surprised to find my 1948 A7 is still on standard bore and the pistons have the BSA logo. There has been fin repairs to the barrel though, so it might be one that was damaged early in its life and then put on a shelf for decades.

Good to hear from you. Never rode anything with rigid suspension except my bicycle. I guess you're saying the seat springs don't do much. Anyway, I'm guessing there are some really interesting places to ride in Croatia.

Post by: Rocket Racer on 17.08. 2025 05:08
my 54 road rocket had a seizure in march, the pistons were cracked. I'm quietly redoing the top end and looking to measure the spring pressures as the cam followers showed a lot of wear. Hopefully have this bike sorted again in the next month or two as it should be a loan bike for the  NZBSAOC international in Feb to someone from the northern hemisphere.
I found work again in Feb so pondering rebuilding Bender, my A10 RR race sidecar. The cases need replacing and ideally needs a fresh barrel. Its done a lot of hard work and the barrels seem to be the weak point when the engines rarely go below 5000 and often hit 7+. I had retired it but would like to do a bit more racing, but it had stopped being the reliable workhorse a few years ago when I had a series of blow ups. I hate to say it but was seriously considering fitting a small fin B33 to it on methanol. As a short rod a10 its always ran as a methanol motor, they are lovely except for all the peripheral maintenance. If I can find a decent barrel might be worth putting it back to log rod spec... jury is out.

Hope everyone well, its cold and wintry here (well relatively)

I think, for our generation, AI is best referred to as Actual Intelligence.

When you see what's around us now, I don't think that's far from the truth.

Much of what we are and know is derived from years of learning, not the 'computer (phone!!) says no' generation.

As many have said before, will there be anyone to follow us lot in engine rebuilding, engineering, practical skills, problem solving, etc, etc.  Even my own sons don't have a first clue (or interest) in mechanics.

The NHS  has handed my knee op off to a private clinic in Plymouth. I was asked to go there today for pre-op tests. I drove 90 minutes each way 138 miles total. All they did was take a blood sample!

I've had both replaced. I can start most of the bikes but the ones I've found hardest are the Dbd 34 and the two smallest a 1929 Francis Barnett 196cc Black Hawk. And Triumph Sports Cub, must be something to do with gearing, but after 7 yrs I'm still improving!!

Remember me? If so you may remember I had to surrender my licence in December 2023 due to a sudden and unexpected medical incident, which was diagnosed as epilepsy, but may not be the case now. Well, after two and a half years of not being able to ride my A10 I decided to sell it. I was sad to see it go, but I knew keeping it covered up in my garage wouldn’t do it any good over time.

It was sold to a Cornishman, so it stays here in the West Country and hopefully will be winding its way through the narrow Cornish roads for a long time to come. I encouraged the new owner to join the forum, so I hope he has, or will.

I’ve been logging into the forum regularly but not being an A10 owner and rider anymore there’s not a lot I can contribute these days, but I do enjoy checking out the various posts, especially by the names familiar to me.

Just thought I’d let you know I’m still here (living  *smiley4*) and . . . sort of still on the forum.

Rog.

My SR still sits in the workshop. Haven't been able to ride it due to side effects of the TN drug I'm on. But I still can see it and touch it every day, because I have the excuse that it's in there waiting to be 'kept' by one of my grandsons. I don't HAVE to part with it (yet). *wink2*
