Title: Amal 'Fabricado en Espana'
Post by: Guy Wilson on 22.10. 2011 15:08
i have Amal 389B 32 fitted to my 1955 A10. Its one I'm rebuilding from that was dismantled a number of year ago in Africa. The carb says 'fabricado en Espana' on the float cover. I've no reason to believe this is not the original carb and I understand Amal was made in spain under license, but was it as early as 1955?
Some ducatis and moto guzis singles were factory fitted with Amal. What's the story?

Guy,
The original carby for a 1955 flash is a 376/1 which is 1-1/16".
The one you have is a 32 mm 389, way too large.

I've never seen or heard of a Spanish 389 or a Spanish monobloc earlier than the 1960s. The reason Amals were made under licence was that the Spanish govenrment insisted that all parts of a bike were made in Spain.
I have a Spanish 376 from a 1960s Montessa Impala. It is the same size as a 376 and uses most of the same parts but the design is like a large size 363 monobloc with the main jet running horizontally into the body on the opposite side to the float chamber. This shortens the carburetter and if you look at an Impala you can see this was done to clear the crankcase. It came with a "Made In Birmingham" float chamber cover. Perhaps you  have a UK made 389 with a Spanish float chamber cover!

I'll stick a photo of it on the forum... It doesn't the machining for an 'O' ring on the manifold face. It did look very nice when I cleaned all the crap of it, so maybe its not so old after all.
