I went to an auto jumble today i got two spanners plus oil tank filter socket cost £3.00 the lot.

Plus £20.00 in diesel LOL

The shop i bought the bike off gave me a gallon of semi synthetic 10 W 40 is that ok to use,he doe's have a collection of wartime bikes so i would imagine he new what he was doing.

You don't say what bike you have. Multigrade is OK if you know the history of the machine. If you do not know if the sludge trap has been cleaned out very recently, I personally wouldn't use it. It would probably wet sump badly if left unused for long & pick up debris & put it in places that could prove expensive if you haven't got an external filter. Put it in the car!

Good job with the socket.
Here is a good thread to look at re oil. http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=7858.msg55858#msg55858
Please post ?'s of a different subject in the correct section, oil = A7 & A10 Engine.
