got an oil leak dripping from between the clutch and gearbox, the oil is nice and clean so i'm sure it's comming from the gearbox oil seal, the thing is i'v just read in the manual that you need to take out the engine is this right ? can anyone please give me some info thanx. "derek" 59 goldflash

On the SA the box can be lifted out without removing the engine. Just take off the timing side engine and gear box plates, and the box will (just) wriggle out.
First check that you didn't overfill the box. When it's overfilled, it'll drip when it's on the side stand (DAMHIK)
EDITED;Just remembered; taking the covers off and removing the innards makes it easier to remove the box

HI Derek,
No neeed to remove engine or gearbox in order to replace the seal on swing arm models
Remove primary case and clutch & gearbox sprocket
I posted recently on problems fitting the seal and circlip

Hi not to cause confusion but I did my box last winter and sure I removed the drive side plates ,couldn't get to the timing side and the box came out quite easily more importantly went back just as easy . John had looked at the oilseal and wondered if it could be done insitu nice to have confirmed it can but is it very fiddly ?? I'm not the most dextrous of guys these days . cheers BOB

As John explains, seal can be changed easy with the box in situ. Just need to remove clutch, inner primary cover and chain sprocket.
Has been a wile since I removed the box, but still sure I took it out timing side.

About the overfilling,
I have an oil leak in my gearbox as well, and the oil seems to come from the primary case side. So the only thing I could think of was the oil seal.
The bike is on the middle stand and is leaking. So either I've put too much oil in it (570ml), or I've got some other problem...
