What is the function of this part? What is the annular groove for?
Is it just to keep the spring in the correct position? Looks to me as it could be left out but I am sure it should not be.

Think you've suss'd it

OK but what's the annular grove for?

The groove is not usually there. It looks more like a bearing centre has been fitted.

Too soft for a bearing centre. Wonder if it was on the original build but no reason to believe this is not original as I've had the bike for years, but who knows?

Both my bikes have the groove

Groovy man!
Wilko Johnson / Roger Daltry "Going back Home" with volume well up is the current groove in the shed (things do keep falling off shelves tho)
Buy it and "Kickstart" you R&B collection (back on subject - did you see how I did that)

Interesting this I have just overhauled my gear box off my 1956 A7 and I also had a spare gearbox so when I assembled the box I fitted new bearings and bushes and used the best parts from both boxes. Now one box had the part that you have shown but the other box had a longer brass bush fitted in place of that part. I used the brass bush as that is what is shown in my parts list for that year. And yes the other part does have that groove in.

I am missing this sleeve.
looking at my kick start quadrant: Instead of a round shaft that this sleeve fits on, I have splines.
I see the same thing on the draganfly parts page, but the kick start quadrant I have must be for an earlier bike according to them (and no picture available).
Does anyone know if this quadrant will work for a later swing arm bike (1958) or should I keep rummaging around for the newer style?
Also, if anyone should happen to have one of these sleeves handy- could you take a measure of the outside diameter and how thick it is? I would really appreciate the help. I can knock one up, but I either need a sample or some measurements.
Thank you,
Lee

Hi Lee,
The sleeve will fit with some quadrants and not with others *????*
There are two types of tooth profiles used on BSA quadrants, basically pointed or more rectangular shaped teeth,
Quadrant and ratchet gear must match each other *warn*
If my memory works *????* I will post the size of the collar tomorrow

Hi Again,
Ok, the sleeve measures 1.0in. id, 1.312in od. and 0.375in. wide
This original sleeve fits nicely on two original two piece quadrants, but will not fit on a new one piece quadrant *????* as that measures 1.010in

Thank you very much john for going to that trouble. *smile*
I will have time to sort one either today or later in the week.
Its starting to snow here again and they are calling for 4 inches.
Thats not a lot of snow, but still requires quite a bit of shoveling.

OK!
I have a buddy who is going to send me one to copy, as long as I make a spare for him also. *smile*
Looks like a simple enough job, when I get it I will post the measurements here for anyone who ever needs it.

My sample looks quite worn, but here is how it measures out:
Outside diameter:. 1.310
Depth of groove: .013 per side
Inside diameter:. 1.00
Width: .380
Groove width .090
All in inches.
I don't think you could go wrong making this .400 wide, this looks quite "ground down" and that's how I will make the new ones.

Hi Lee,
I have a couple of boxes apart, so had several sleeves to measure
They were all within a thou of 0.375 wide
The sleeve must not protrude past the shoulder on the shaft

Thank you John,
This one definitely measures .380, but it looks worn thin. *conf* The groove in the center is off-center, I could not think of a good reason why it would be (just a little) to one side so I assumed it was worn?
My quadrant is the spline type, and the splines still stick out at least .010. I was worried about that thinking the spline surface would wear on the cover?

Hi Lee,
I do not know the purpose of the groove on the sleeve outer? or see any reason to have it ??
My thoughts were if the sleeve was too wide the kickstart would get stuck when the outer casing is tightened up *????* *????*
