Title: 276 set up with no filter
Post by: Metty66 on 08.08. 2015 08:54
Hi All onto the next problem!! Just bought a new 276GG/1DB from burlen fitted it ok started up straight away first kick and felt nice and crisp then tried to let it idle but it died. Had a job getting it to start again. It seemed to be slightly better with no throttle no tickle but with air closed (full choke). But still very hard to start and plugs sooty. Pilot out 1 1/2 turns and about 4 threads on the throttle stop. All other settings as per How Amal set it up from the shop. Should I have different slide or anything running with no air filter and bell mouth?? thanks for any advice offered. Ian.

No air filter and bellmouth is normally rectified with a bigger main jet. As far as the starting problem is concerned I would try  increasing the idle speed slightly. If the bike keeps kicking you back you've gone too far. I also find that when an A10 floods it will start quite easily on 3/4 or full throttle opening. I seem to remember my plunger starting easier with a handful of throttle.

Don't expect it to idle until it's warm.

Don't make final adjustments to the idle until the engine is warm.

Clean the soot off the plugs.

G'day Metty66.
I agree with TT.
No air filter needs a bigger main and might need the needle lifted a notch but won't affect idle much at all.
Initial setting of the pilot screw is 1 1/2 turns out but may end up 1/2 turn either way. Initial setting for the idle screw is 1 1/2 turns up after it first touches the slide (make sure the cable is slack).
Cheers

I constantly play with the idle.  When I start the bike (when the engine is cold), I give it a half turn so the bike will stay running.  As it warms up, I back the screw out.  After I ride it for a few miles and I stop at an intersection, I reach down and back it out a final time.  As long as I crack the throttle when I kick it over, it will always start on the first kick.  This is the most finicky vehicle that I've ever own as far as engine temperature and idle speed.

I use the throttle to keep it running until it's hot enough to idle.

I'm pretty sure that's what most people do.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps. Think I might have the throttle cable a bit tight as I've just replaced the air and throttle cables. Will try loosening off cos it did seem to like it more when I gave it no throttle at all. Luckily I have two weeks off work may need them. Will let you know what happens. Thanks again. *smiley4*

Hi got the a10 running today. Started first time again, slackened off the throttle cable a bit and made sure it didn't stall till I got it warmed up. Lowered throttle stop (screwing out) and screwed the pilot in but still wouldn't tick over slowly even with pilot screwed right in. Bit stuck now to be honest!! *sad2*

Full in is rich(? I think Guzzi is opposite, I get 'em mixed up), how about with the pilot wound out..?

Hi Dutch got faster wound out.

I set at 1 1/2 turns out (from fully wound in, just seated). Then wind out 1/8th turns till it falters. Then in till it falters and then back out 1/2 way between the two. Then set idle and do it again.
Cheers

Maybe you exceeded the slack you created as you lowered the slide?

..?? (scratches head)...so what's wrong with that..?? Then you need to wind the idle screw out again (simultaneously even), if it makes no difference, ensure the cable still has slack
I know they can be a bit cantankerous at times... *smile*

Hi all turns out it was because I had sand blasted my plugs!! Are there any that will stand blasting like the old ones I used on my 80's 2 strokes which I used to take to the local garage to blast on their cabinet? Seen a few alternatives on green sparkplugs website but unsure which if any to try.
Thanks for all previous help.
