Have noticed that 1st and 2nd piston rings have a reduced 'notched' corner maybe only a few thou.Does this corner face up or down ?
Thank's

I think you will find that there is some etched-in text on one side of the ring and that should face up, as I understand it. Feel free to wait for a second opinion.

Rings usually come with instructions.
If you post a picture, we might have some idea.

Anything useful here?

In days of old some rings when supplied not with pistons, had a step on the outer corner, these were for the rings to clear any "step" worn in the bore. So the top ring would have the step to the top and the lower ring to the bottom. Very possible when fitting new rings to a slightly worn bore for the ring to break when it hits the step.
