Title: 1950 Golden Flash kickstart quadrant
Post by: bennyonions on 18.02. 2016 14:50
Hi There,

Got a little issue that is niggling.
In replacing the quadrant on the golden flash i have run into supercession hell.. The original quadrant is superceeded to 1954 unit that uses a return spring that is too bulky to fit.
The original had a clock spring which is thin and connects to splines in the kickstart shaft which the new unit does not have.
Can anyone tell me if the gearbox outer case is moulded differently in the later model to cater for the larger profiled spring need to return a later quadrant?

Not sure I understand your question correctly but the outer case on a swinging arm model is different to the outer case on a plunger.

Thanks.. That is my problem then.
Do you know if the later case would fit the old inner case?.. The old style quadrant is proving to be impossible to source.

The swing arm cover will not fit. Also different gear change mechanism.
Check if the later plunger cover used the wire spring.

I'm no expert but from my experience....
I'm currently running a box that is a replacement for the box that came with my ~'52/3.
I swapped the outer covers complete for some reason (maybe because I'd had it polished), it fitted straight on no problem, but wasn't until recently I realised the difference; the earlier outer cover (Rigid?/ early Plunger?) which accommodates the flat spring has a peg(roll-pin) that the ring on the end of the spring fits over, this peg doesn't go through the outer casing as does the later Plunger case which has a 1/4" Cheese-head (or whatever), and a nut on the outside.
As someone pointed out a while ago, the earlier main casing has a slightly different casting where the two bottom rear mounting bolts screw in, the late ones are a bit beefier but still fit ok, and I'm not aware of any other differences, except that swingarm cases are More or less completely different.

 Hope that's helpful.

Here's the two types of cover.
I've got quite a few of the later ones but you are probably too far away for it to be economic to send one.
