Title: New bloke with a new (old) bike......
Post by: Bender on 15.05. 2009 09:07
Hi all......

Nice to finally get here..... Been watching this site for a while now, trying to learn a bit about these older bikes before buying one.

I recently got myself a 1951 A7 plunger.   While it's still original, rideable and in good nick, i have to wait to get it registered before i can take it on the road. I don't think i'll bother restoring it yet. It's still quite nice the way it is....(will post a picture when i can work out how to get one to 600KB??)

I still have plenty of questions though, so i will start with this one.....

What is the pipe coming from the underside of the the oil tank for?   It's a short bit of copper pipe that ends just above the chain. I think engine oil leaks from here on mine while the bike is stationary.

Welcome to the forum. Good choice of bike, I have a 51' A7 also,

The pipe you are refering to is the breather from the oil tank. Usually there is a bit of tube about 6" long attached to it. Sometimes there is a slight amount of oil on the end of the tube but it shouldnt drip oil.

Most likely the oil is coming from somewhere else. Give it all a good clean and watch to see where it comes from.

Thanks for the friendly welcome boys....     and i must say, i am quite jealous of some of the machines you lot own. (Been watching you increase your stable of bikes over the years, L.J., on your website. Some great journeys you've made as well.)       I'm dead keen on getting out on the road as soon as i can get this bike registered.

Thanks for your comment Ace! I was inspired to write up my experiences after reading some others riders adventures found on the Internet, photos along with all the details of the cooking and camping all carried on the back of the bikes racks made great reading. Hopefully it will encourage others to do likewise.
