Title: Fantastic service from Chronometric Services
Post by: Greybeard on 03.02. 2017 11:12
Since fitting longer-legged final drive parts my bikes speedo has been under reading by 10%.
While the machine is in winter storage I decided to get the speedo recalibrated. Not trusting postal services with my precious speedo I took the unit to Chronometric Services in Northampton Nottingham. I was quite prepared to leave the speedo with the chap but he said why not wait while I do the work. After looking at the unit he said the case was not the correct one, also, the new bezel I had fitted was poor quality. So, Mr Chronometric, (Russell Smalley) recalibrated the speedo, fitted a correct case, fitted a new bezel and gasket. I was expecting a three figure charge for this work. Guess how much he charged me? 25UKP, TWENTY FIVE QUID! Fantastic man in his lovely man cave surrounded by old Motorcycle parts.  *smile*
If you need a chronometric device serviced PLEASE get it to Chronometric Services at Northampton Nottingham UK.

His name is probably Russell,, and he worked in the Smiths calibration dept.

Last time I was at Russell Smalley's (Chronometrics UK) place he was Nottingham based.
Similar good value though!

Full marks for Russell at Chronometric Services.  Full clean and service for £75, now works like, guess what, clockwork.  Really friendly and professional.  So nice to find people who know their craft. *wink2* *beer*

Just searched the forums for advice on speedo repair and found this thread. I've emailed this company twice, months apart, but no reply. 😕😕 (Hence my search to find a decent company...)

I'm impressed at the recommendations though, so will try again - but will phone this time. If not, any other recommendations?

t20racerman - I'd give Russell a call and keep trying!  He can get really busy at times so don't be surprised if it takes a little while for him to get back to you.  In fact, he did say to me when he did mine a couple of months back that work picks up in the colder months as bikes are taken off the road for the winter and owners start addressing those niggling issues - like speedo faults!!  I can guarantee 100% that Russell is a top man, a real pleasure to deal with, and excellent work on the Smiths.

As advised, I phoned and had a chat. Very impressive and very helpful. They can convert my trip from bottom to side (RGS style) for just £25, and do a full guaranteed repair for a further £75. I'm very happy with that  *smile*

Thanks for encouraging me to try again folks.

A E Pople in Surrey is good, as apparently is Dave Woods in West Sussex.

I dealt with Russell in 2016 and last year.
He sold me a correct tachometer for my bike (1962 Super Rocket), wanted to convert to twin clock configuration and converted my Speedo from bottom reset to side reset. Also purchased cables and a bulb holder. Outstanding craftsmanship and a pleasure to deal with even outside UK.
Recommend him highly.

Can only agree re. Russell. Had a couple of minor probs (not his fault) with my speedo since he serviced it which he sorted extremely quickly and for free. I actually rang him up and offered to pay him this week and he declined saying the problem was something he should have spotted earlier. Test drove the speedo today and is now sorted. Top guy!

Has anyone got Russell's email address ?
The button on his website won't work for me,  *dunno*

Roy.

Tom Mason at Union Mills on 'The Island' does mine when I attend the Classic TT. Motor cycle restorer and a clock maker!

Lump hammer in one hand and eye glass in the other!! *smile* *smile*

Always fascinates me to see clocks  and motor cycles side by side under repair in the same workshop.
