Title: A10 rear brake conversion cable to rod

Hi again everyone since my bike has been on ebay a few from this forum have asked how I converted my rear brake from cable to rod I will post some pics it is a great improvement but it does require some modification of the actuator on the gearbox side it is also a bit tight around the oil pipes but well worth the time and trouble it actually works and feels like a brake instead of a sponge Chris

Now then Chrisf1, a nice mod that I would like to do if I ever get time. *respect*
However I note your first post was in June and I do hope that since then you have had time to tighten up that  bottom rear shocker bolt  *lol*

This was done early in the production of the A65 which used the same brake. I think they used a two piece rod.

This mod is surprisingly common and makes one hell of a difference to the feel of the rear brake. The ones I've seen are welded modifications onto the existing cable arm. The cable design was really dumb but BSA were trying to save every penny they could.

Hi Everone
Thanks for all your replys, I have been in touch with Chris via PM he has been very helpful and given me some pointers.

Brain Pollit BSA OC (Lightning Spares) did this mod some time ago made the rod Z shaped and extended the brake plate torque arm 1'', i think he used the existing brake lever arm (upwards).

Trev: Had a look at a A65 at Newark Autojumble you are correct in saying it is a two piece rod but there is a intermedate bracket welded to frame so that a no go.

Chris's mod goes inside the frame giving a direct pull, hope to do the same will take photos and dimension of the arm that will need to mods to it to bring the connection inside.

Will keep you updated on progress.

does the movement of the S/A cause the rod to pull or push on the brake arm ???

Hi Nick,
with the help of my friend Tom ,I've done a similar conversion earlier this year,it worked out well, if you need any photos ,or measurements ect, i can email them to you, or put the job lot up on the forum for all to see.

Bill: Not able to answer your question, but I think it will be the same for any rod type oprerated rear brake.

Ronnie: Any photo, dimension  will  be a great help posted on the forum or Email to me its your choice.

What type of brake arm did you use and length ?, what diameter of rod did you use?, how did you construct the S/A end lever? any help will be great.

With a bit luck I have purchased an A 65 Brake Arm 68-6042 from the States via Ebay looks like the one to the job.

Just to clarify whether converting to rod from cable will affect braking effort due the swing arm movement - My A10/RGS has the original rod operated Goldie type rear brake with the rod on the nearside (left for non UK riders etc!) and I can confirm that the rod end at the front is almost coincident with the centre pivot of the swing arm (which does not carry the cross over cable brake spindle), the rod runs parallel to and in line with the swing arm to the rear with the rear lever keeping the rod end virtually passing through the wheel centre in the side view. Hence, the BSA original design was technically correct in avoiding swing arm movement affecting brake action.
The cable arrangement converted to rod is different in that the brake arm pivot is at the swing arm pivot but the arm then carries the rod higher by the length of the arm connecting the rod, therefore there will be interaction between the swing arm movement and braking effort BUT I've not heard anyone say they've noticed it.

Hi folks,
Heres my attempt at the rear brake mod, its similar to one already mentioned.
The cable operated job, is replaced by  a rod attached to the rear hub brake arm, the rod runs from the brake arm through the small space between the oil tank and the oil feed pipe where its then attached to a modified lever
the modified  lever is bolted to the splines on the crossover shaft as normal

To make the new lever mod i at first thought of using an old gearchange lever as it was a good fit on the crossover shaft splines i was going to cut the lever  off near its base and weld  a fabricated lever  to it
However i found a brake lever in my bits and pieces that looked the right length and fitted the splines like a glove.
My friend Tom welded a bracket to a piece of hollow tubing, the bracket had one hole in it to attach the brake rod and another hole to bolt the assembley together
This would allow me to alter the angle of the rod pull and to shorten the tube length without having to cut and reweld each time.       When i was happy with the pull angle and the tubing length tom welded the lot together.This mod is working very well and has totally transformed my rear brake

Hi Everyone
The Brake Arm 42/6042 from the states via Ebay has arrived, I was hopeing as it was for an early A50/65 it was going to fit straight on. no such luck as it has the multi settings adjustment and is to big.

Not sure what action to take.
Option 1: Weld up the bolt hole re-drill and file square?
Option 2: Any ideals guys.

Hi again everyone been away for a long time but the lust is still there its just that the body is not so willing nowadays anyway after starting this post a few years back I have been catching up with whats going on and this came up about possible interference from the movement of the swinging arm! Well here is my answer it makes no difference at all as both ends of the rod are on swivels and the amount of movement if any getting by the swivels does not notice I can honestly say I think this was the most practical and worthwhile upgrade I did on an A10 which made the brake feel like a brake instead of a sponge Chris

Good to hear from you, with your help and Ronnie I produced a step by step guide how to make up the converstion with basic tools and skills and only one trip for welding early this year with a few guys asking for the information.

Have been very pleased with the results, a good friend of mine has just made me the Z arm in stainless steel, will take photo  and post it when fitted.
