Is it possible to dismantle the A/R unit and correct 60 yrs of wear. Can the pegs be replaced and the corresponding holes in the bob weights be bushed etc.

Yeh mugwump, the unit can be refurbuished.
Not sure about the pegs and bushing specifically but all the good magneto service guys rebuild them and many sell the parts.  Check out a couple of websites for parts availability.

Try Andrew at Priory Magneto's. He did a great job refurbing mine *smile*
