Title: Lock washer?
Post by: coater87 on 01.07. 2017 15:08
I have never run into a "lock washer" that looks like this... *conf*

How do you use this thing? It has some tabs that fit into a spline, that I understand. But the dished part? Not so much....

And what is the hole for?

To me a lock washer locks a nut or bolt down to keep it from backing off by bending tabs onto the flats.

Am I suppose to just beat the tar out of this thing to get it around the flats? Am I suppose to notch tabs into it? Is the hole for safety wire?????

Should I just toss it out and use a real lock washer...whats the deal with this thing? *conf*

Oh, and a picture of the bike.

It is the usual A10 gearbox sprocket nut lock washer.

Orignally for the circular nut which fits in the dish.

Just bend it over a couple of the flats on the SRM nut.

The nuts do tend to slacken off in use.  I use a bit of thread locker as well.

As for the hole? Dont know.

 Thanks Julian,

First time I have ever seen a 'lock washer" that locks nothing. You would almost think its a KIA automotive part. *smile*

I will beat the sass out of it so it actually locks.

The tabs on the inside of the washer fit into the splines on the sleeve gear which are for fitting the sprocket. Bend over a couple of the edges of the washer and it locks sprocket to the SRM nut.

Not quite the case... as Julian pointed out, it's for the original round nuts that have four 'cutouts/notches' (there's a name for 'em I'm sure) for a tube type socket-spanner, and the washer is knurled/peined up into those- and the internal bits go into the splines

 Dunno about the hole either

hi guys, details from Manual if that helps don't use that washer myself but I guess when the nut is tightened it deforms the tabs when it hits the end of the splines, anyway see if you can work it out, cheers

It's the same washer as the final drive sprocket right?

Because somehow I have 2 of those KIA washers. Neither looks very effective. ;)

No, its different' You probably ordered a set of lock washers and then the SRM nut that comes with its own washer  *????*
I just use thread locking fluid on the crank nut, the original washer is a *** poor effort *eek*

I do use that washer but I honestly dont know how effective it is I know its a damned pain to fit

I have always hoped that locktite and 65 pounds on the torque wrench will keep the damned nut tight anyway
