Title: Speedo cable lube
Post by: RoyC on 16.02. 2018 07:53
Does a new speedo cable need lubricating and if so would a thin film of silicone grease be ok ?
I don't want to ruin my new speedo with oil.

Roy.

I just use HMP grease on the lower half.

Oil can also get into the cable by a poor fit between the speedo driven gear and bush in the outer gearbox cover. If oil also drips from the speedo cable by the crimping which gives you some indication of the fit. Not to be confused with oil escaping from between the bush and the outer cover.

If this does leak, do I need to replace all of the parts in the speedo drive ?  -

You dont need to replace the small bush 65 3377.

You might not need to replace any of it. Usually the oil drips out of the cable where it joins the light alloy ferrule by the gearbox which helps keep it out of the speedo head. You could check the cable after some use and see if it is oily.

If you think there is too much then you could replace but I am not convinced that the pattern bushes are much better than an old one for fit. The driven gear has an oil scroll to help keep the oil out of the cable, it might help a bit but the later driven gears have a fragile O ring fitted which helps a bit more.

Photo show later type bush and driven gear with O ring.

Thanks Julian.
I'll wait and see how it performs before ordering new parts.
Will the later type fit my std box ?

yes it will got one fitted in my A10, problem can be finding one. If you had an oil problem I would have though you would see evidence of lots of oil on your old cable.

My old cable is black and oily inside.
From 78 to 84, are any of these items the later one ?

Roy, I gave my idea on this a week or so ago, why not email Andrew @ Priory and ask him? Probably be a lot more effective than a shitload of differing ideas

Hi duTch, do you know (or anyone else here know) if Andrew is open for business again? I've ordered some bits elsewhere as I didn't want to pester him if he aint. Normally he'd be my first point of call.

I did ask that the other day and (I think) Morris said he is, but best contact Andrew direct to be sure.

**edited; I'll re-phrase ^^ I think he said he received a package, but that doesn't necessarily mean 'open for trading'

Well I must say, that without the "shitload of differing ideas" on this forum, my bike would never have got finished.
I am very grateful for all of the help that I have received.

Roy.

Roy, my apologies if I may have come across a bit harsh- had been out 'socialising' (spell uncheck don't like that so I admit had gotten ***** *beer*), and a bit cheeky- sometimes not a bad thing *smile*
