And greetings from sunny, warm south France, near the mediterranean :O)
My 19e sat dish in the garden, this evening (still provides a good signal!).

And a few cm's of snow here and there and it's total panic in France, airports, trains, roads, schools etc stops working. Funny.

Here in Yorkshire we appear to be heading for the collapse of civilization seemingly due to The Beast from the East, old ladies are clearing the shelves of the supermarkets of Bread , milk , butter and bleach just in case they cant get in tomorrow..........God help us if we get a full inch of snow!

Two weeks ago they had some snow in the Paris region. One of my French colleagues who lives at 25 km distance left office at about 18.30h and finally arrived home at 03.00h in the morning... Complete chaos.

^^^ Yes, was on the tv 24\24, 5 cm of snow like if some major terror attack (probably was in french' eyes, jihad from Mother Nature). They drive on their worn out summer tires (that includes police, buses, firetrucks etc) even when clearly warned days in advance of forthcoming snow and 'verglas'.

And if they by chance got chains or some decent snow tires, it's 1. don't know how and\or too lazy to fit them 2. are in the garage at home 45 km away.

Generally, french great lack of knowledge and practicality when faced with any problem is only equalled by the great ability to complain to \ blame administration \ government when anything goes wrong lol+++

For reference, travelling on the main road between Bergen-Oslo in N (two biggest cities), highest point in middle of winter. They keep it open (unless in the very middle of serious snowstorm of course).

Blocked in in 63 for three weeks, used tractors to get to nearest village (7 miles) for food, week two local baker walked 1 mile up to the farm with a basket of bread, took milk in convoy of 9 tracors in large plastic bags to the creamery at Alnwick (15 miles).
Snow was to deep for Coucil ploughs so JCB diggers and men with shovels ( us) had to dig out the roads - that's snow

We do seem to have become a very frightened society. Two or three inches here and trains cancelled schools closed and the advice to stay indoors unless you have to travel.
The following is snow 1987 the road through the village I lived in the other way was worse as it went through a valley.

It's about -1° C here but the wind chill is making it feel much colder  :-\ . I would not want to be out on my bike in this. I've been in my shed making stuff this morning but I was glad to come inside for a hot coffee.  *computer*

Not much laying snow here at the moment. It came down hard yesterday but obviously not cold enough to stay.

got a good 4/5 inches here and still falling, had the dog out ( he loves it) met a young lad walking, he had brought his mate out to one of the cottages then got his car stuck down the road a bit, had to abandon it in the middle of the road (fantastic - heed the warnings ) we are four miles from the nearest village 7 miles from the next.

They're not look at the first one of mine , see the red gutters on the Hall behind the car, otherwise it's snow (white or yellow  *eek*) and no greenery cause it's winter.
Get's to the point where it's not so funny, this is the road into the nearest village which we need to pass through, I need a prescription picked up in five days time so hoping for a change in the weather or a snow plough ( for fellow rural dwellers it's a big yellow thing you might have seen on the news).
The farm now under new ownership has a plough on a tractor ( I used to drive it in winter) but I no longer work so can't just get kitted up and go and take it out to clear roads as I used to.
Don't know how many ploughs the Council has now after all the cuts, what they have are probably following each other up the A1 so just have to sit it out I guess
God I'm getting to be a grumpy old whinge, Dogs back in though

CLEARLY shows quite indiscernibly 'red gutters' and slightly more discerible red-ish tail lights on the car- my bad *bash* *smile*

On the other hand, only made it up to 36º/37º here today, a bit sluggish...reminds me of the days when I dug holes for a living (as in I physically made the aperture in the ground, and then had the opportunity to sit and appraise it- digit *conf2* dug it man...) oh yeah learned to stab a crowbar into the ground rather than lay it down.....kinda like working with spanners and metal bar and stuff and leaving it in the sun....almost burned crap outta my fingers today, except lucky that i picked it up where I already burned them yesterday *eek*...anyway G-B, you're early; it wasn't even your spring when you started this, so maybe you hexed yerself, it'll instantly warm up now    *smile*  *smile*

Apologies guys for posts referring to pics that are not there, I'm having trouble getting such post to actually post, just get a white screen, think it might be something holding things up, have tried altering the file type, all files under 750KB and so forth, then one will suddenly go, can't work it out unless as one messages stated ( website my be under maintenance )

^^^ pictures seems to be there ok? Posts (just) fine from here on my varying 0.5 to 2 Mb rural 3g. With some slow or intermitent internet connection, the picture upload can time out in the middle of the upload, which produce different 'symptoms'. btw, max filesize is upped to 1500k some time ago (generally faster internet (nearly) everywhere, more server storage space).

-----------------------

Here's what met me this morning, car disapeared under snow, + blocked by 1m+ of heavy snow fence, courtesy the kind work of the road maintenance guys (very good by the way except for the blocking, they are there early even on this remote sideroad). Anyway, just have to clean it up and continue trying to make an exit *angry*

And this time the French have a right to complain, more than 50 cm many places, that's disruptive, not the 3 cm they generally moan about.

I see that Bramble, (good name by the way) is a Border Terrier. Our previous dog, Dixie was one of them, also kept one of her pups, Jack, (until his kidneys failed). Our present woof is Bridie, an Irish Terrier as seen here: https://youtu.be/j7oUwWA9ERo (https://youtu.be/j7oUwWA9ERo)

Indeed. Our male Bengal cat really enjoyed the dog, despite that she would regularly mount him; very strange, (probably an attempt to dominate him)! Sadly the old boy had a stroke so is no longer with us.

Using my Sherlock Holmes-like powers of reasoning Watson, (Topdad) I deduce that there is a strong possibility, nae, a probability, but not a conclusive certainty, that you may, or may not, live at a house that has the street number twelve, being numbered in the the decimal numeral system (also called base-ten positional numeral system, and occasionally called denary).
In making this assumption, and given the normal method in the UK of labeling even numbered dwellings on one side of the road and odd numbered houses on the other, it may be assumed that your house is approximately the sixth one on that side of the road, unless unconventional numbering has been used in your street; in which case your abode may well be the twelfth of such dwellings in that road.

On the other hand, you might have knicked wheely-bins from somewhere else!

Cool barbecue/oven/fireplace by the way!

Your just too kind kiwgf

Just had Bramble out for a walk, nothing going to move here for some time, roads have been opened by a JCB with a bucket on the front that's fine for the tractors that they are using to get to work but it pads the snow down and leaves an couple of inches of hard pack snow that you can't stand on let alone try to drive a car.
Ended up on my idiot of course, man's best friend came running back to check me out, strange tho when your lying on your back gently moving limbs to see they are still all in one piece, sloppy licks are not exactly what's required but it's the thought that counts as they say.

I don't think any engine does well inhaling liquid. I remember a petrol VW Golf coming in to our workshop when I was a mechanic in the 70's  that had driven though floods. The engine was destroyed  *work* . I thought then; why do they put the air intake low down beside the engine sump?  *conf2*

Well, a good sign is that our tortoise has decided to make an appearance after surviving the recent bitterly cold weather in his little hut. He survived the bad winter of 1963 in my parent's garden (I was in the Far East, so missed it *smiley4* ). He's at least 68 years old, has always lived outdoors and has the free run of the garden and makes his way back to his hut at the end of each day. Photo is of my wife feeding him after his hibernation as he hasn't the strength to do it himself for a day or so.

Hi Shirl  *wave* .
Hi Tortoise  *wave* I bet he's got a cute name. Don't tell us; let's have a guessing game. My guess is Alfred.

I have a tortoise but he is a comparative young-un at just 8 yrs. His name is Earl.

I'm picking up a Plunger petrol tank from Leicestershire tomorrow. I'm trying to persuade myself that it would be enjoyable to go on the Beeza. Ideally heavy rain today to wash salt & grit off the road, and warmer temps tomorrow would good.

It might be this stupid thing where if council and government departments do not use their full allocation of something, (or budget) it automatically gets reduced the following year.

...wonder does it also apply to potholes, they seem to be stockpiling them

I believe the highway authorities were storing them in a huge warehouse somewhere but they've realised that the potholes were getting close to their Use By date so they have been loading trucks up with holes and have been installing them on the roads.
I heard that one truck was carrying a massive pothole when it fell off the back. It hadn't been properly strapped down you see. The driver reversed to pick up the hole, the truck fell into the hole; the vehicle and the driver were never seen again. Tragic!

Is a pothole a whole hole or is it a half hole?

Wikipedia says:
A gonad or sex gland or reproductive gland is a mixed gland that produces the gametes (sex cells) and sex hormones of an organism. In the female of the species the reproductive cells are the egg cells, and in the male the reproductive cells are the sperm. The male gonad, the testicle, produces sperm in the form of spermatozoa. The female gonad, the ovary, produces egg cells. Both of these gametes, are haploid germ cells.

Very nice pub - frequented by none other than the Queen, who lives round the corner at Sandringham.

We are very lucky here in Norfolk we have some lovely villages with fantastic pubs, and the TERRIBLE road network keep outsiders away! Get off my land!

Oh 'Brother', were you so happy on that machine that you became a 'Singer'?
I bet you were just 'bobbin' along!
Glad you didn't get the 'needle'!
This is a very long 'thread', eh?
If you stored your bike gear on top of a cupboard you could describe it as 'Overlocker'.
Were you able to keep up with the 'Jones's'?
I might be 'Bias'ed but I just love BSA's
Glad the brakes were not 'Binding'
I'll be 'Darned' if I can stop this nonsense!

Ok, enough from me; over to you guys!

I headed out West for the weekend on the Loop – destination Upton upon Severn. Roads out there are still thick with salt and grit – piled up down the middle on the narrower lanes. Still some snow in the verges too.

Thinking they've taken to laying enough salt at the slightest inclination that I need a bike I really don't care about for winter miles. A Honda perhaps.

Hi Peter, All I can say is "Luxury", but of course you are on the west coast. Here in the Hunter Valley east coast, we have just had 10 consecutive days above 38 C, several 40-41. My shed has an un-insulated iron roof and the walls are concrete blocks, so keeps it above 40 C until well after midnight. The hot blast across Australia seems to exit near Newcastle, so we have copped an unusually long run of heat. Anyway it beats the two days of 47 C we had summer before last. It is cool today for the first time - 24 C, so getting back to work on the BSA.

It seems the world is currently getting warmer: Best not to get into the whys and wherefores. You folks in Australasia are finding the heat pretty bad at the moment. What if average maximum temperatures were to continue to rise? Might there be mass exoduses to temperate climates? Also, if sea levels rise, there are likely to be large areas of land that become flooded; another reason for people to leave their homes. Discuss?

Musky, you can come and live in our back bedroom. I could do with your help on my BSA!

Yikes!  *cry*

My brother-in-law worked as a Nursing volunteer in Rwanda. He was invited to a nursing conference in Chicago. When he stepped off the plane he was still dressed for Africa, in shorts and a light shirt. He pretty sharpish found a mans clothing shop!

Hi Richard, jeez thats cold ,stay save , ,bet you all managed to get to work , obviously the right kind of "cold" whereas over here it's always the wrong type and stops everything due to a 1 inch dusting of snow/frost .
