Please can I ask for advice?
As part of a '53 A10 plunger project I've had the wheels rebuilt with new bearings. Now the front brake plate is sitting slightly proud of the wheel hub, leaving a small gap (4mm) through which I can see the brake shoes. The new sealed bearings, which came from Feked, are seated properly. If I take the hub bearing locking ring out on the brake assembly side, the brake plate assembly now sits in properly so I'm wondering if the new bearing is wider than the original. With new sealed bearings, can I leave the locking ring out? Alternatively, is there something else I've not done properly or should check?
Many thanks

Hi,
The locking rings have different sized inner holes, you may have them fitted the wrong way round *????*

i have not been at the pub, don't know if this helps but ive had similar happen on my single sided front brake many times over the years and it was ME not getting things lined up to fit together *bash*after wrestling with it many times *pull hair out* *problem*then all of a sudden it all clicks into place *yeah*

That was my thought.

yep, the backing plate does not touch the bearing retainer, if it does then it will tear it apart as the wheel turns.
The backing plate has to butt up to the inner race of the bearing.
Do not omitt the split pin to stop the retaining plate undoing.
We have just finished doing the front wheel on a Spit and the new bearings are wider than the originals so we had to grind down the retainers to get the slots to line up with the pin hole.

Thank you very much for the replies - that's identified the issue: both locking plates have the same small size holes. I should have one with a larger hole to allow the brake backing plate to move up against the inner bearing. At the moment the backing plate just rubs against the locking plate because the hole is too small. Time to order the right part!
Thanks again!

Best of luck ordering that! I had to scour the WWW to find one only to find I didn't need it after all. If you get stuck PM me and you can have it for the price I paid.

The only difference between the left & the right is the size of the hole so just cut the one you have larger.
They are only zinc so very easy to work.
Back in the open baring days, a close fit was important but now wea are using sealed bearings it really does not matter if the hole is not exactly round, no one is going to see it.
