Title: Main shaft end play
Post by: roadrocket on 03.05. 2018 20:25
Hello,
I had to retire from a 3 day run due to my clutch suddenly being out of adjustment. Upon inspection I could move the clutch and main shaft about 6 mm. What controls the sideways movement of the shaft? I would say the bearings judging from the drawing, but the shaft moves freely in the sleeve pinion... I have not yet opened the box, but have been pondering what it could be.

Cheers, Otto in DK

The only thing that holds the shaft in place is the smaller bearing on the right in the inner case. The ratchet bushing butts up against the bearing so with a bit of luck it's just the ratchet nut that came loose.
Or worse, the inner cover's inside bearing lip sheared off (happened to me recently)
Another possibility is that the bearing clip worked itself out of its groove.

The 6 spring clutch on my RR fell off the centre completely when that crap nut came undone, but I had no-go all.

I'll go with the above suggestions too, and you should be able to see it through the inspection cover as it's right there behind the clutch arm adjuster.
You probably need to pull the outer cover to tighten it though, as not easy to remove the clutch arm in-situ (*with cover off clutch  arm *doesn't* need removing except to check/grease)

Thanks folks!

The problem is now solved. It was the nut in the timing side that was loose, due to some plonker not having bent the tabwasher... That would be me. Now tightened and secured. No damage done.

It may benefit from Loctite.
