appreciate its not from Smallheath but when the opportunity to buy this came up I increased my mortgage  *eek* dramatically, just had to be done.
Needs a bit of fettling but is rideable albeit not currently roadlegal

Very cool!,,  not some grey porridge rapide or comet either!   I know a local guy who went thru hell & high water to join the Vincent community and is fettling a Rapide.  A SOUND financial investment if I do say so myself, Vintage commodities such as this are much more stable than Bonds, mutual funds or my poorly performing 401k.  During the 2008-2009 recession Vintage vehicles dropped but nowhere near other investments.  Plus, properly cared for and insured, are a HELL of a lot more fun! Congrats!

"It is," I assured him. "The fucker's not much for turning, but it's pure hell on the straightaway. It'll outrun the F-111 until takeoff."

"Takeoff?" he said. "Can we handle that much torque?"

"Absolutely," I said. "I'll call New York for some cash."

"What's the entry fee?" I asked the desk-man.

"Two fifty," he said.

"What if I told you I had a Vincent Black Shadow?"

He stared up at me, saying nothing, not friendly. I noticed he was wearing a .38 revolver on his belt. "Forget it," I said. "My driver's sick anyway."

His eyes narrowed. "Your driver ain't the only one sick around here, buddy."

"He has a bone in his throat," I said.

"What?"

The man was getting ugly, but suddenly his eyes switched away. He was staring at something else . . .

My attorney; no longer wearing his Danish sunglasses, no longer wearing his Acapulco shirt . . . a very crazy looking person, half-naked and breathing heavily.

"What's the trouble here?" he croaked. "This man is my client. Are you prepared to go to court?"

I grabbed his shoulder and gently spun him around. "Never mind," I said. "It's the Black Shadow -- they won't accept it."

"Wait a minute!" he shouted. "What do you mean, they won't accept it? Have you made a deal with these pigs?"

"Certainly not," I said, pushing him along toward the gate. "But you notice they're all armed. We're the only people here without guns. Can't you hear that shooting over there?"

 


Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72 (1973)

After Miami the calendar shows a bit of rest on the political front -- but not for me: I have to come back out to California and ride that goddamn fiendish Vincent Black Shadow again, for the road tests. The original plan was to deal with the beast in my off-hours during the California primary coverage, but serious problems developed.

 Ten days before the election -- with McGovern apparently so far ahead that most of the press people were looking for ways to avoid covering the final week -- I drove out to Ventura, a satellite town just north of L.A. in the San Fernando Valley, to pick up the bugger and use it to cover the rest of the primary. Greg Jackson, an ABC correspondent who used to race motorcycles, went along with me. We were both curious about this machine. Chris Bunche, editor of Choppers magazine, said it was so fast and terrible that it made the extremely fast Honda 750 seem like a harmless toy.

This proved to be absolutely true. I rode a factory-demo Honda for a while, just to get the feel of being back on a serious road-runner again . . . and it seemed just fine: very quick, very powerful, very easy in the hands, one-touch electric starter. A very civilized machine, in all, and I might even be tempted to buy one if I didn't have the same gut distaste for Hondas that the American Honda management has for Rolling Stone. They don't like the image. "You meet the nicest people on a Honda," they say -- but according to a letter from American Honda to the Rolling Stone ad manager, none of these nicest people have much stomach for a magazine like the Stone.

Which is probably just as well; because if you're a safe, happy, nice, young Republican you probably don't want to read about things like dope, rock music and politics anyway. You want to stick with Time, and for weekend recreation do a bit of the laid-back street-cruising on your big fast Honda 750. . . maybe burn a Sportster or a Triumph here or there, just for the fun of it: But nothing serious, because when you start that kind of thing you don't meet many nice people.

Jesus! Another tangent, and right up front, this time -- the whole lead, in fact, completely fucked.

But first things first. We were talking about motorcycles. Jackson and I were out there in Ventura fucking around with a 750 Honda and an experimental prototype of the new Vincent -- a 1000-cc brute that proved to be so awesomely fast that I didn't even have time to get scared of it before I found myself coming up on a highway stoplight at ninety miles an hour and then skidding halfway through the intersection with both wheel-brakes locked.

A genuinely hellish bike. Second gear peaks around 65 -- cruising speed on the freeways -- and third winds out somewhere between 95 and 100. I never got to fourth, which takes you up to 120 or so -- and after that you shift into fifth.

 

Top speed is 140, more or less, depending on how the thing is tuned -- but there is nowhere in Los Angeles County to run a bike like that. I managed to get it back from Ventura to McGovern's downtown headquarters hotel, staying mainly in second gear, but the vibration almost fused my wrist bones and boiling oil from the breather pipes turned my right foot completely black. Later, when I tried to start it up for another test-run, the backlash from the kick-starter almost broke my leg. For two days afterward I limped around with a golfball-sized blood-bruise in my right arch.

Later in the week I tried the bastard again, but it stalled on a ramp leading up to the Hollywood Freeway and I almost broke my hand when I exploded in a stupid, screaming rage and punched the gas tank. After that I locked it up and left it in the hotel parking lot -- where it sat for many days with a MCGOVERN FOR PRESIDENT tag on the handlebars.

George never mentioned it, and when I suggested to Gary Hart that the Senator might like to take the machine out for a quick test-ride and some photos for the national press, I got almost exactly the same reaction that Mankiewicz laid on me in Florida when I suggested that McGovern could pick up a million or so votes by inviting the wire-service photographers to come out and snap him lounging around on the beach with a can of beer in his hand and wearing my Grateful Dead T-shirt.

RR, you'll enjoy that.
The Vincent twin makes a great touring bike, enough power to do two up touring and not struggle on hills.
They aren't nearly as fast as the exaggerated stories like the one above, but you are used to that, you have a BSA!
I always have a chuckle when someone spots my Vincent and tells me- " that's a Vincent , it will cruise all day at 100 mph"
Right
Lots of them won't crack the ton, full bore, rider on tank.
I've a really good , fairly standard tune one that does 115, GPS. 8 to one and 28mm carbs, mk1 cams.
The other one is more like 105, but it has high performance parts to help slow it down :) 9 to one, ported to 34 mm, two front heads, 34mm carbs , lightning cams.

But slow down to 70 and they run smooth and last. They pull strongly on hills
Weve done 60,000 miles touring on the one bike, mostly 2 up with full luggage. Canada, USA and Great Britain. No major issues, just speedo cables and a couple of busted Alton's  But nothing with the original bike which was just the 38th one built after WW2.

The week before it was hurtling down the Sulby Straight IOM at top speed. After that we loaded it up and toured 2500 miles.
The bike to the right is a 1916 Douglas. The rider was on a 1500 mile tour, but had a support vehicle, the car+ trailer in the photo. We are alongside Loch Ness, which was a big deal to someone from West coast NA.!
RR, I hope once you get the bike sorted you'll do some touring on it. That's what they really shine at.

In its current state the clutch slips like a bugger (oil had leaked onto the clutch shoes) and there's something really wrong with the steering, probably head bearings, but it also has the wrong rim sizes. So will start off with a clutch rebuild, fresh rims and tyres (of the correct size) and a hydraulic steering damper. It runs really nicely and has a sweet gearbox, it is rideable as long as light throttle setting used , otherwise the clutch slip kicks in.
It has been in storage for many years and the motor was rebuilt around '82 although the elderly owner didnt ride it much and has since passed away.
I'd never really considered one, have owned a lot of different bikes (modern and classic) but when I saw this my plans all went out the window and I had to get myself in the queue of interested parties and luckily the two mates ahead of me either already owned one or had more interest in prewar exotica.
There's a 5 week wait on rims so I'm thinking it'll be ready for the spring. When I told my fiancee I'd bought it (another piece of good news -got engaged last week) she suggested we should park it in the lounge  *thanks*. After a number of tough years, life is presently as good as it gets... *woo*

planning on keeping my two A10 road rockets *wink2* . the 72 rocket three will have to go and perhaps when my 54 road rocket is back on the road, quite likely the 71 lightning will go too. But want to keep all my 50's machinery.
Will have a bit of a clean out, a nice SC gearbox, the joe hunt mag (now serviced with new coil, but was a bugger to fit to an A10), lots of full width hubs  *conf2* and various sets of cases, spare engine plates. oh and a complete winged wheel  *roll*. DO need to work out if I'm going to use a roadgoing sidecar I havent got room for.
I've had a ride on an indian four, very smooth but not really my cup of tea. the v8 is very special, from the side it looks like a four. The builder has some really nice cammy velo's  *dribble*

But I'm looking forward to having the vincent sorted, just ordering wheel parts from central wheels in birmingham. Going back to chrome and painted 19 & 20" rims
Off to Whangarei for a weekend rally later today on the ZB33 with the BSA crew, should be a nice ride up the coast via Matakana, Mangawhai and Langes

I know bugger all about Vinnies except I'd love to have one. Was surprised that they have a 20" wheel. Tyres would be hard to get.
We always get a few Shadows/Rapides at our show but this year we had a Black Prince (won Bike of the Show). The whisper going around was that it just had a $100,000 restoration.

 sold at auction for £264-000 IF ONLY a motorcycle news reporter and camera man where travelling down autoban to german GP on his vincent black lightning with stieb sidecar at 100mph if he blipped throttle wide open the rear tyre gave a puff of smoke??

Its up on a mates workshop table and so far all good, the clutch shoes were sodden with oil but otherwise the clutch all in good nick. Looks to be a lightning unit, all finned and factory lightened.
Also the dodgy steering became evident from the slop in the head bearing, so fairly easy fixes so far.

A bit of a lag while new rims are delivered, but roll on spring.

Interesting to see that pic of the two series c's. the black shadow appears to have a rapide speedo and the rapide a shadow one  *pull hair out*  so much to take in...

Intriguingly the brake plates are all magnesium so valuable genuine good stuff but not necessarily ideal. Aluminium meant to e more robust.

That puff of smoke would be from the exhaust. The riders  handbook states that normal oil consumption  is 1500 miles per Imperial Gallon!
Fortunately with modern low expansion pistons running at .0035" oil consumption is very low. I have done the 2800 mile roundtrip run from Vancouver BC to Grass Valley California without adding any oil on the trip, just 8 ounces needed to fill at home. 
Hotrodded Rapide, Black Shadow or Lightning, there's no way the back wheel will break loose on acceleration at 100 mph, but they are still a great old bike. :)

Well maybe Super Nero or Mighty Mouse could do such things.

Supposed to be riding for three and half days this weekend to give it a suitable shakedown a circuit round the far north. Currently no air filters so will try and avoid the unsealed roads.
Still needs a bit of fettling but its got long legs.
First world problems.

I've owned and ridden every sort of motorcycle that gets thrown my way and enjoy appreciate many.  I can always sell one if it doesnt make me smile anymore. Life is too short to not experiment with another bike.
I didnt know they make John Deeres' in Stevenage *dunno* I did once own an 18hp cub cadet  *shh*
Riding up in the far north over the weekend (four days on the bike), my ZB33 would have been better suited on the tight stuff.
not too many bits fell off, so really just another classic bike at the end of the day.

There is alternatives, not all of them penned out. The classic bike article about the Vincent Amanda product launch in the US is pretty amazing tale.  (It caught fire and sank in front of the press, hardly an inspiring endorsement)

So,, I have friends with Vincents and few leave them stock but they get pretty sensitive to jokes and criticism. Touchy bunch.  So the watercraft one usually is an unwelcome comparison.

I'd better start a thread on my winged wheel to balance the ledger even though its down the project priority list. Got my mag back yesterday for the 54 RR and the timing on the 2 cylinders have 0 degrees difference, so presumably a selective build from the factory!

The B2 I saw belonged to the late Paul Carr a beesa man through and through.
Now I've got this voc club run done, the next priority is to help my son paint his mini, then clear some seventies beesas from the shed. The 71 lightning is a real nice bike, but the gearboxes on the later bikes are upside down and I need space to get the road rockets sorted.
at least the series C has  the correct gearbox pattern.

I certainly wouldn’t want to be considered to be shooting down another man’s ride. I can only comment – ‘not for me’. And lord knows my tastes are broad enough and probably weird enough.

In the same way, whilst I love my A10, I wouldn’t be wanting more than one of them. And yes I accept there are at least 57 different varieties.

Now the Winged Wheel I could covet.
