Title: Major wet sumping while riding.
Post by: BSA500 on 14.08. 2018 22:07
Riding home from work and bike started to smoke quickly followed by oil pi****g out of the breather. Obviously the oil was not returning and had gone pass the rings.
Background it's an A7 with oil filter conversion 500 miles on from a bottom end rebuild. Recent work replaced sump/timing case and primary case gaskets. It's got an cast iron body oil pump. So check return pipe ball bearing pump and oil lines and filter???

Yes, the oil return is being stopped somewhere.

The pump continues to pump oil out of the tank, yours cannot find its way back to the tank by the return lines so its coming out the breather.

I would start right at the inlet to the filter (about in the middle of the total return) and see if you have return flow there. then keep moving toward the tank or the motor depending on what you find in that spot.

Obviously putting a catch-pan under first

Yep that's the plan. Pull the return line off the filter and check for flow

Also I will check for kinked or pinched pipes. My worry is I will check it all and its fine

Does your filter need changing ?
Are your oil pipes the right way round ?

first bit is correct  but "gone past the rings" - doubt the engine would still fire if that much was going through the cylinders

Recent work replaced sump/timing case and primary case gaskets.

right the primary case gasket if wrinkled a long the bottom of the case can leak a lot of oil ( found that out last week  *whistle*)

most likely cause from reading your post is the sump, very easy to put it on wrong way around (it's square) thereby blocking oil from getting into the return pipe, the hole for the pipe in the gauze being offset, there is only one correct orientation.
hope you get it sorted

It did go pass the rings as I was doing a great impression of the red arrows  *smile*. I will check the gauze as I have been in there recently but it definitely went out the breather.

Did you do the inner timing cover too? If so, could be possible the gasket thickness has upset the breather top-hat end float...?

yep if the sump fills up that's where it goes and also up past the rings

Make sure the sump is on the right way round and the magnetic drain plug is not under the return pipe. That would stop oil returning back to the tank.

When the A10 wet sump recently see https://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=13251.msg106487#msg106487 (https://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=13251.msg106487#msg106487) the oil defiantly went past the rings. I actually poured oil out of the left hand exhaust. Did not find a smoking gun in terms of the cause  *dunno* but she seems to not have suffered any ill effects (so far)  :-\

Just a thought , when you had all this work done did you replace the gasket on the oil pump ,reason for asking is that others have mentioned( john I think  ) that the holes in some of these gaskets are smaller than standard causing problems but while you are checking worth a look .

just reading through again BSA500, think I read into it something that was not there, was thinking the oil getting past the rings was from the top, makes more sense it pushing past from the bottom.

My bad as they say (makes no sense to me but you know getting down with the kids and all that)

About all has been said really, BUT please DO let us know the outcome and fix, so that we can refer others (or ourselves) with similar problems in future.

Looking forward to result.  *smile*

Solved. Between cleaning up the alloy sump plate putting on new gaskets I managed to put the screen on the wrong way covering the pick up pipe  WHAT A TWAT

G'day BSA500.
Don't fell too bad mate. We ALL do it at some point with something or other.  *clap* for letting us know it was something simple.
Out of all the things I've lost it's my memory I miss the most.
Cheers
