Title: A7SS has no breather fitted. Shape or dimensions?
Post by: Peter Gee on 12.09. 2018 20:37
Blow me..pardon the pun, to discover my 59 A7SS has no pipe fixture where the timed breather exits just next to the magneto. I will have to fabricate something but no parts book illustrates the item.

I guess copper or steel pipe  length is meant to exit there..the bore is smooth so I expect a heat fit driven in. But is it straight piece or tubing, it's dimensions or is it a bend at90 degrees or so?

I accept this is a very arcane and perhaps stupid enquiry.

After intense "Google Images" I discovered it is a gooseneck shape, and copper..must be a standard BSP copper tube dimensionI can work out.

I think no pipe is standard

I've had three A10s none had pipes other then one I fitted myself (from a milking machine?)

My 56 s/a has no pipe, nor does the spare “ca10” crankcase I have.

Dear BSA and Kiwi, well that yours had no pipes is amazing...perhaps mine is a feature, not a bug!???..so any oil emitted via the breather is just meant to dribble down the back of the TSside? Ugh!

I think a pipe is supposed to be there to direct oil mist onto the chain and sprocket.

in witch case there will be a part number ??? there is a breather pipe bolt/nut so you would think there should be a pipe but I'm thinking this was for the previous gearbox attached version where it is shown

 The parts lists I have clearly show well hidden breather pipe and 'P' clip;

  ‘Late A10’    Part #'s Breather Pipe    67-09222
                                'P'  Clip              67-0923

Also in the '49-'53 & '54-57 books for Plungers, S/A Road Rockets and SS

Pipe shown as straight- bend to suit.....  *conf2*..... the'P' clip attaches via a set-screw (#1-4606) to the underside of the Chaincase above the drive sprocket to act as a primitive and probably highly ineffective 'chain-oiler'

iv'e got two shooting star engines and never seen a breather pipe until I tapped the hole that exits on the clutch side and directed the mist onto the final drive chain. I think it was a plungy thing . but it doesn't exit on the timing side

I didn't think that SAs had a pipe, never seen one anyway, just breath hrough the Stoma! Plungers do though, least mines got one.

G'day fellas.
They all fell out because the P clip is a prick to get in.
I put a thread in the hole and made fitting a to screw in then attach a hose to it.
Cheers

Got it Musky..won't bother with the tapping...JB Weld will do a perfect job of making sure the breather pipe does not come out.

Over many years, all the A7's, A10,s and RGS engine I have had and many miles covered, none had a pipe and never was a bother.....

There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.
Some do & some don't.
A lot of ignorant idiots put a plug in the hole to "cure the oil leak".
They have also been known to fall out & get tangles in the secondary chain ( not pretty )
On a lot of bikes one of the primary bolts was longer so a P clip could be slipped over the end of it with a nut that you can see & not get any tool known to man onto.

Check! My method for this is to hold the 'P' clip, spring washer, and nut over the exit hole for the extra long case screw with a finger so most of the work is done by the time the screw is tight. It then takes a couple of small spanner swings to nip the nut up.
