A very useful chart here https://www.britbike.com/technical/bsa_chains.html gives a length of 96-102, not quite exact enough for my purposes. dont want to be adding or subtracting links.
Everything is newly renovated. How many links do I need?
Much appreciated.

98 and a 1/2
If in doubt talk to the chain man http://www.the-chain-man.co.uk/
He knows everything about chains
-
97 links according to my Bernal Osborne book.

See, everyone *smile* has a different answer!

It's easier to break links out than add 'em in

98 solo and 97 sidecar gearing according to the BSA Data book for 1959.
Same figures from the Reynolds catalogue for 1959 (below)

97 includes a half link as otherwise it has to have an even number. Just fitted a new Renolds primary chain to my machine after securing a small mortgage to pay for the bloody thing. 97 links is a perfect fit with the gearbox just a gnat's forward of centre on the adjuster.
