Title: Steering head cup projects about 2mm
Post by: Steverat on 04.12. 2018 18:23
Even seated right down in the lug counterbore, the new top cup sticks out about 2mm. Does anyone know this? Is it a problem? I managed to fit the balls and the cones okay but of course the top cone is a bit higher so there will be a gap between the top of the fork shrouds and the underside of the top yoke. Bottom cup sits nice and flush.

Hi,
Sounds about right, but there should be a dust cover 66-5203 fitted between the cone and top yoke
this covers the gap

Yes but the gap I'm expecting is between the shrouds and the top yoke since the yoke will be sitting higher. The old cup was flush with the top of the steeering head lug when fitted.

Won’t be a problem. Here’s a picture of my plunger steering head after the modification to taper bearings
The cup sticks out even more than your 2mm. Pay well attention to the adjustment and it won’t be an issue.

yep I remember another post talking about this issue, I think they resolved it by fitting an O ring around the fork leg such that the gap wasn't obvious......
