I have a BSA Golden Flash plunger from 1955 and the kick started to get stuck when trying to start it so I ordered new parts to repair it.
Got the new parts, well they looked a little bit different, but I changed kickstart spindle, ratchet pinion and the pinion.
Tried to kick it and the kick was stuck in lower position, it didn't return. I have the set from a 1949-1950 gearbox also and it does the same when trying it.
Seems that a previous owner have changed the gearbox to another model and I don't know which year it is from..
My question is do anyone know, which year is the gearbox from, where I can get a ratchet pinion for that quadrant and what is the spare part number.

hi Stikkan, your pics show `plunger frame` parts maybe you need `swing arm` parts, here is the parts and part numbers for both hope you can figure it out, cheers

Well it's a plunger I have and (for me) the strange thing is that when I change everything for the kick (quadrant, ratchet pinion and ratchet for a 1955 model) it get stuck, same with ratchet pinion from a 1948-1950. So one of my wounder is if there is a plunger gearbox with a quadrant with a flat tooth on the spindle. I know that a 1948-1950 and 1951-1955 have pointed tooth's but I have no idea how it is on later models.
And what I need is the ratchet pinion for a quadrant with flat tooth, where can I find it?

Hi Stikkan,
It looks like you were sold non matching parts *sad2*
There are only two different types, pointed tooth or flat top tooth
Either type pair will work for any year gearbox
It is essential that both parts have the same shape tooth
Some time ago I bought a couple of flat top tooth pinions, However they were not properly made !!!!
The inner bore for the bush was too big *problem* Beware of this if you buy a flat top pinion
Did you buy both parts from the same dealer? If so I would ask for matching parts

G'day Stikkan.
Ditto Johns reply ^^^. I had to make my own bush for the pinion. Your lever getting stuck down is a good indication of miss matched parts. Keep the pinion and try to get a pointy quadrant.
Cheers

I bought a quadrant 67-3178 and a pinion 67-3168, both with pointing tooth's, from Draganfly, according to the spare part book those should be for a BSA 1954-1955 BSA A10 plunger gearbox. When fitting them they got stuck.
What I had in the gearbox was that quadrant with flat tooth's and if I want to keep it I need a pinion which is like an U in the bottom of the tooth,s and not like a V. Because the new parts that I bought doesn't fit I'm trying to find a pinion with for the quadrant with a flat tooth.

Sorry I wasn't clear with my picks. They show the quadrant and the pinion which was in the gearbox when opening it.
They don't show the spare parts I bought. Here is a picture of the worn pinion.

Hi Stikkan,
Is the ratchet pinion free to turn on its bush?
If the nut on the mainshaft is over tightened the bush can distort and jam the pinion
Wrong assembly can also cause problems ???

hi Stikkan the part numbers are on this sheet, cheers

The parts change at engine ZA10 6130 in mid 1951.
The parts changed again for all models in 1955. Change as a pair only. Dont mix with earlier parts.
The quadrant changed again to 42 3160 (one piece) on a parts bulletin in December 1956.
I would query the parts supplied with Draganfly.
Does the quadrant revolve freely in its bushes and return on the spring if the cover is fixed on without the ratchet pinion? New shaft in old bushes may be tight and it may simply need the quadrant bushes relieving.

I have not been to the pub, that is very good information julianS I was looking on googly last night and thinking about typing that out because I am not computer clued up proper to transfer that type of info, well done I am sure it will help many of us out in the future , me included when sorting my box of gear stuff out. *good3*

I'm sure you would get help for PC related issues if you asked here.

I think I found the problem.
When checking my orders I see that the quadrant has spare part number 67-3178 and the pinion 67-3376 (ordered wrong one) and they don't match each other. So either I have to get a quadrant 67-3375 or pinion 67-3168, *sad2*
Thanks all for your information

That BSA service sheet 8 is very confusing. Depending on how you read it, the quadrant and pinion have the same part number. And is the GS assembly a mis-print?

PROBLEM SOLVED.
Bought a pinion 67-3168 to my flat tooth quadrant and now it works as it should.
Thank for all your help.

I'm just addressing this on my swing arm 54 box for which the parts list references the earlier plunger part 3168. I'll order the later new swing arm type gear and consider I may need to change other gearbox bits to suit. I do have quite a lot of gearbox outer covers with inards both plunger and swingarm type if I can help anyone with gearbox odds and sods but those ratchet gears are always stuffed.
Very useful info that 55 BSA sheet
