Title: Timing cover mods for tacho drive.
Post by: PDMiller on 23.02. 2019 22:30
Apologies if this has been covered but I'm wondering if a standard timing cover can be machined to take a tacho drive gearbox. I see that some covers are re-enforced on the inside where the hole would be machined out and the screw holes would be tapped but mine isn't.
I suspect that my latest hunt is to be for a proper timing cover but just wondered if anyone had converted a standard one.

Thanks
Pete

There's a fair bit involved to convert the cover.
The easy bit is the holes but it has to have a flat machined around the hole.

did one last year, got a welder geezer to build one up as near to the original one is, dressed it up to same pattern as original then gave both covers to brother who did the holes same as original one , its on the bike now and the original is for another ss engine, original ones are too much money--- get one built up and engineering shop will bang the holes in at the correct angles, think welder man charged £20 E D ITTT sorry you mean 2to 1 drive , I went to the pub--- not with it yet--- yes its been covered somewhere I THINK

Yep- I did it last year.  If you do a search for Super Rocket or SR ruining cover or tacho drive you should find results....
I can have a look later if I have time- too hard on this phone

Have seen it done successfully with araldite.

Hi Pete
My spare has the re-inforced bit on the inside. Its not perfect a bit of a scuff bottom left but should polish up. We could do a swap if you go down the adapting path.
Will supply pictures if you want.

Sounds good to me Angus will PM you with some pics and if you're happy I'll post it off.

Thanks

Just curious, Pete, has your cover got the shroud around the breather?

The one that's on at the minute has the shroud around the breather but no re-enforcing where the tacho drive would go. I had thought of having a go at welding a piece in with the ali welding kit but worried that I end up with a big blob of molten metal so I'm waiting for the proper one to arrive.
