1961 (or 1960?) Super rocket - When investigating why my centre stand scrapes so badly, it looks like its been bent and twisted. The photo below shows the current black one next to a rusty spare I have. But there are some differences. Could anyone comment if they think my theories and plan below make sense:
1. the 2 stands are the same with the rusty one looking more original (I can’t see part numbers on them).
2. the black one has an extra shoe welded to each foot to raise it. Not sure why.
3. the black one has had oversized mounting holes and an oversized pivot pin through it – I imagine as the original was worn. This new pin is secured by a bolt into each end. I assume there are matching changes to the frame lugs. Someone has also installed grease nipples which I assume are not standard.
4. I’ve read the later stands were cast steel so the plan is to get some heat on it to straighten it. I assume the foot lever part is also cast steel… yes?
Does that sound right and make sense?

Yes, I've straightened these with oxy torch before. The extended feet were probably welded on to compensate for the wear in the stand mounts. This is not a very good solution as the stand sits further forward and makes it difficult to push the bike off the stand, better to fix the mounts. These later stands aren't very strong and will twist if the bike is pushed off the stand with unequal pressure on the legs or if the bike falls over. I've welded strengthening bars down the inside of the legs on some of mine. I've also altered the foot lever to give better leverage which makes it less of a struggle to get the bike on the stand and less likely to get into difficulties with the bike being unevenly balanced on the stand feet.

as far as grease nipple goes possibly it is standard my 55 stand has one. and as beezermacc says oxy torch will be ok with cast steel I got my top yoke sorted with oxy torch by pulling it down on a thick steel plate at work years ago. it was bent after a bad come off and when the fork tapers were pulled up the forks twisted.

Make sure you are using the correct stand as similar stands were used on other models.

similar stands were used on other models
the black one has a pn that is hard to make out but looks enough like 42-4761, hence likely correct.
the rusty one is cast tho no pn - only 'BS1' on one leg and 'BS2' on the other. any guesses?
I'll probably try repairing the existing black one and may take the angle grinder to the extended shoes on its feet.

My '56 s/a has two (half) castings welded together with a bush through the pivot and a grease nipple....

happy ending: the black stand above had the right part number. it straightened easily with gas and I also rotated upwards the kick lever by quite a bit for more cornering clearance, i welded some bar down the inside of the legs so should be super strong. and cut the extra feet off.
i'm a rough stick welder but even good old 6013 rods were fine with the cast steel (and some grinding back *work* *work*). don't look carefuly at the pic below.
now on the centre stand the rear tyre sits 1 1/2" above ground and the bike is a LOT easier to get on the stand. I've yet to give it a hard ride but expect the cornering clearance to be much better. *smile* *smile*
