Title: engine case studs
Post by: coater87 on 15.09. 2009 01:06
Hello,

I have decided to just bite the bullet and order every nut, bolt and stud new for this rebuild. What I have is either wrong, stripped, or bent- Most of the studs look like they were removed with a vice grips placed expertly on the exposed threads. I have enough stuff to sort out without having to worry about what is correct and what isn't in the bag of rusty bolts.

Anyway, I have found the part numbers for everything, except the engine case studs. I am looking at the parts book ( for 58) and can find 11 fasteners, but my cases call for 14.

 What I have is this:
67-355   x1
67-74     X1
67-350   x3
29-4101  x2
67-352   x4

 These are all studs.

What am I missing here? I have stared at this thing forever, and I just cannot see it. It also calls for 9 washers and nuts of the same size.

Were there supposed to be some bolts used here? I sure wish I had gotten to take this apart the first time, but this might explain some of the threaded rod that was used *conf*

Thanks for any help on this, I know its a pain in the backside kind of question.

Looking on the frame drawing:

66-4163  x1
65-4182  x1

Edit: That leaves one unanswered for. Number 67-350 actually appears on both drawings, indicating 3 each time. I wish I knew the exact answer, but I don't. My guess would be that the frame drawing should have shown no 67-350s and 4 should have been indicated on the case drawing, but, truly a WAG.

See next post

Thanks for the quiz/riddle.

OK, I think you may be counting the breather dowel as a bolt/stud.

Have'nt got my parts book at hand but just wonder if you are counting some of the engine to frame studs as case studs ?

All the best - Bill

 Thank you guys,

I think between the two of you I should be able to sort this out. I have just been studying the wrong pages.

Richard, I had the exact same thought when my 11 didnt equal 14. But I think Bill has hit the head here, these are motor mount bolts that just happen to fit through the cases. I am sure of this because I also ordered new studs- those were removed and then ground almost to a point. No idea why....

Lee,

Well, engine-mount studs that fit through the cases appear front and rear. The rear ones do not appear on the picture of the exploded motor but on the picture of the frame with the gearbox plates. The front ones go through the stamped mounts that fit around the dynamo. For those, the studs are shown on both drawings. Confusing. I still don't see where you get 14, and am anxious to know the answer, if it is not, indeed, that the extra hole you are countiing is for the breather dowel.

I am sorry, but more glad, that I don't have my cases apart to look at this first hand.

Lee,

Is there a hole or a stud that I have missed in this picture? I hope this helps.

 Richard,

I am on my way to work, and its too dark in the shed to check. But I believe it may be either between 1 and 2, or 7 and 8.

But dont hold me to this until I have had another look!
