Title: RGS tacho cable
Post by: a101960 on 27.09. 2009 14:19
I bought a new speedo and tacho cable for my RGS. The speedo cable is fine but the tacho cable is about 3" to short it measures 2' 10" which is what the Romac book says is the correct length. The old cable is roughly about 38" I think that maybe there is an error or misprint in the Romac book. The cable I have would suit a Super Rocket I think because the instruments are mounted lower down on the Super Rocket. The RGS instruments are mounted quite a bit higher. Does anyone know the correct specification and/or part number for the RGS item?

Curiouser, and curiouser! Well I have done a bit more research since my original post. It seems that I need the Gold Star tacho cable which is.........wait for it, wait for it, yep, it is 38 and 1/2 inches! More to the point, the BSA parts book is also wrong. The part number for an RGS tacho cable is 42-9227 and is described as being 2' 10 and a 1/2". That is way to short. The Gold Star cable is exactly the same length as the u/s cable that I removed from my bike which is a perfect fit. So you RGS owners out there, I would advise you to make a note for future reference. As luck would have it, I am probally the only RGS owner that did not know about this. It makes me wonder what other little booby traps are hidden away within the various parts book pages.

No the bike is not a genuine RGS, but you would be hard put to tell that. The crucial point is that the instrument mountings and everything else on my bike are are the correct RGS items and that the listed cable is incorrect. It is to short it would fit a Super Rocket because that has different instrument mountings. If you look in the Roy Bacon BSA twin restoration book the differences are immediately apparent. See this thread on what a genuine RGS is or is not. http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=865.0 It is true that BSA produced only about 2000 Rocket Gold Stars, but not all GENUINE Gold Stars were made by BSA.

"but not all GENUINE Gold Stars were made by BSA."
That's quite a statement. Who were the other makers?

Don't know that a101960 meant Gold Stars but were not the first RGS from Eddie Dow ?

All the best - Bill
