Title: RAL number for Silver tank

Can anyone give me the RAL number (or equivalent) for the silver on a RGS/Gold Star tpetrol tank?

Anyway...RAL is a color matching system used mainly for powder coating. For example RAL 9005 is the code for jet black etc etc...http://www.ralcolor.com/ (http://www.ralcolor.com/) has the basic range of colours available.

Another similar system is call Pantone which is mostly used in the printing industry.

So endeth lesson one.

However.....................anybody tell me what the colour is or should be matched to?????

I personally wouldn't powder coat a petrol tank, the silver is a bit dull & very hard to touch-up if it chips.
Not trying to be smart, but silver is pretty much silver, & the only variation is the size of the sparkle.
I would mask up your side panels that remain chrome, rub the remainder of the tank down with 1200 w&dry,
then etch prime followed by silver base coat, then multiple coats of 2-pack clear. I always use the fine sparkle
on older bikes, back in the old days they would have probably used silver enamel.

I am planning to paint the whole tank one colour cause the chrome is crap. The reason I'm considering powder is that the bike will definately not be concours or original and I'm looking for a good hard wearing finish for a bike which I hope will be used to ride in all weathers. And the weather here is rubbish! Some nice Oz sun would be appreciated now and again....
Is it possible to get a metalflake finish with powder? I had the frame powder coated and the painter offered a metalflake finish as he thought it was for a modern/custome bike. The plain black turned out well on the frame and forks.

With absolutely no powder-coat experience, I am of the belief that powder coating on tins is not a good idea. They get dinged and need repair and they are often surfaced with varying amounts of body filler. To me, baking body filler underneath powder coating just does not seem a good idea and, I've heard, shows up under the powder. I think you will read that in one of the above topics.

Just my 2 bits worth but powder coating is not a great finish on a tank.
Apart from not looking right the powder coat on my tank is very brittle, it doesn't scratch easily but it does chip and is very hard to repair properly.

Unit 11-13 Britannia Works Skinner Lane Pontefract 01977 600283. He is used to working with all bike parts and also has a stall at Rufforth Autojumble,York.
There must be a good powder coater in your area so try him ,you need someone who is used to fancy finishes. Alan

My local poweder coater - who has it must be said done a fantastic job with the frame and other cycle parts - is confident of doing the tank.

Now I am a little confused but thankfully I wont be at the tank painting stage for a number of months yet so will have an debate with myself between the merits of powder coating Vs two pack.

Incidently what is the colour for a wet paint finished silver Star Twin tank? I see someone else is asking the same question...
