Title: Who's best for Silencers.
Post by: A10rocket on 14.02. 2010 16:22
Hi, this is my first post (I'm a newby). I'm restoring a '61 Super Rocket and am virtually ready for the big put together. I'm dissapointed with the quality of silencers people are selling. They seem to have a bean tin in the middle and you can see where the three pieces of the body are joined.
I've been reading one of the threads about Super Rocket exhaust and the chap seems happy with Armours front pipes but what about silencers?  I want standard type.  Has anyone seen the quality lately since they started getting stuff from abroad?

Brituro had a stall at Stafford last year which upset a few people in the trade, so I had a look and the pair he pulled out of boxes was very poor.
He may of been trying to shift seconds.

I don't mind paying good money for good stuff but it's hard to find.
Anyone had experience of Toga ?

Cheers.

Hello, and welcome to this great forum. I can tell you of my experience of Armours silencers, i know the company receive mixed opinions here, and a mate once had norton silencers on which the chrome quickly came off in strips, although they did have issues with the platers they were using at the time, and they did the decent thing and replaced them with good ones. That is the only bad experience i`ve known personally (and it was over 20 years ago). Myself, i bought a goldie silencer in 2001, which is still on my bike to this day (despite spending 3 or 4 years in a shed with a leaking roof!) I am fortunate in that i live 10 minutes up the road from Armours, so can see the bits i buy before i pay for them, but i haven`t had any problems with anything i`ve bought off them over the years. I don`t have any connection with them, this is just my
personal experience.  Hope that`s helpful to you, regards Rich

p.s. I wasn`t aware armours imported silencers, as they make their own on the premises, and get them plated locally, at least they always used to, might be different now, but making their own was always the basis of their business. Saying that, i haven`t been in there for a year or so, so i don`t know. *smiley4*

I've had good service and a good quality product from Armours. I had a Francis Barnet exhaust last year.

Welcome,

I have used Armours Stainless Steel headers and silencers, very happy with them, they sound sweet, did not fit quite right, will be taking them to a muffler shop to the have them tweaked to suit, the stainless product is of very high quality.

Not much help here but I bought a pair of Campells some time ago, good chrome but don't know how they sound yet as their on my project.
Bought them and was told they are made by the same people that always made them but no longer trade under that name ( well they would say that wouldn't they)
However there is this site http://www.campbellcustom.co.uk/Kawasaki%2007%20Z1000.htm might not be the same folk - don't know but I know Campbells were available in US in 2000 ,made in England and sold by Wallridge in US amongst others.

Surely with the wealth of knowledge hear someone would know

All the best - Bill

G'day there,
I also have a '61 S/R, I purchased mine from,  a U.S. supplier,
he supplies quality Emigo silencers, I ordered mufflers & header pipes
- $330.00 + freight. All great quality, & fit like a glove!
if you send me a p/message I'll shoot you the email.

Hi
I would recommend Armours, Pipes and Silencers a very good fit for my 1962 Super Rocket, but the cooling fins and exhaust clamps where not up to standard, sent them back for refund with no problems.

Regards
Nick

P.S Welcome to the forum.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
As I'm in the UK I'm going to try and buy in the UK.
Buying from the states is tempting as they usually know about quality, but sometimes customs
may slap their bit on as well if your unluky,  and if your not satisfied and they have to go back
it's a costly exercise.

It's looking towards Armours at the minute.  No ones even mentioned Toga.  Are they still in existence ?

Cheers

afaik there are no more Toga exhaust systems available for the A10. I don't know whether the firm itself still exists, a while ago I've seen silencers for the new Bonneville labeled "Toga". No idea whether they are the real deal.
But most firms producing exhausts use the Toga numbers, like B22 for the pre '58 A10 pipes.

I have had Armours products before, some time ago now, and in terms of durability and fit they were pretty good. The problem I found (at least with my Ajay 500 single exhaust)was simply cosmetic: Instead of the beautiful "serpentine" sweeping curves of  the (original) pipe, the Armours item had nasty sharp top bend ,with too small a radius,it had horrid "Throating" on the inside of the pipe caused by the "shoe" of the bending machine-( I used to see these all the time in my younger days as a pipe fitter for BNFL-it didn`t matter for an industrial steam/water/chemical pipe in an industrial plant!) I felt that Armours had fallen at the final hurdle on this one and that was a crying shame given the otherwise evident effort to provide good quality. This looked like it would have been OK underneath a Ford Escort-out of sight!!! I rang Armours at the time to point out what I thought was a real shame-and got pretty short shrift-"well thats how it is, thats how we make em mate", a  terse "take it or leave it " attitude which has prevented me from buying any more from them- i replaced it with a hand bent one fron Unity Equipe-  copied from my original , and got it chromed locally. Its still on 14 years later, the Armours one hangs in the rafters of my garage rusting in peace.... Bob.
