Title: Tyre/tire recommendations?
Post by: siwilson on 08.06. 2007 21:59
The tyres/tires on my bike are definitely due for replacement - not close to worn out, just very old.

Can I ask if anyone's bought any recently, if so what make/sizes for the front/rear? I quite like the look of the Avon Roadrunners but not sure what sizes are best.

TIA

/Simon

Hello. have been using Avon Roadrunner universal 4.10-19, very good. Others are very happy with Dunlop K81 too.

Are you using that size on both front and rear?

Thanks,

/Simon

RR Universal 410-19 front+rear. Grip and wear has been fine.

I use RR universal as well, very good, I think handling is better with a slimmer tyre on front though.

All the best - Bill

Hi Simon,

Sorry if 'teaching Granny to suck eggs' but the 19 refers to the wheel diameter so the tyre obviously has to match the wheel size, 19inches being standard for A10s front and rear.
The other number refers to the wheel section.  The standard sizes for A10 being 3.25inches front and 3.5 inches rear.
I personally use a ribbed 325/19 Avon speedmaster mkII on the front which appears to be a common choice on many of the classic bikes I've seen on the road and in museums. I've got the same make of tyre on the rear but 350/19 and a different tread pattern.  The square looking section on the rear tyre does look dated compared to modern tyres but it does the job nicely for the fair weather riding I do.

Regards

I've got a Roadrider on the front of the A10 and an SM MkII on the rear. Being a good bendswinging day, I thought I would check just how much of the tread I was using. Left side limitation is the sidestand kicking up sparks, right side is the footrest grinding. In both cases on dry roads, the rear tyre hung on just fine with no hint of stepping out. So it seems that the SM Mk II despite its square section is good enough for an A10 at maximum available angle of lean.
All in the interests of science of course.

Dunlop K70 350x19 rear, avon speedmaster 3.25x19 front always been my favourite on many bikes. Used to be my favourite for hill-climb racing as well.

black sheep - is that not pics of a roadrider? (ie not road runner). (also - a glimpse of a tls setup?).
avon need to get some new names - avoid endless mixups
i have roadriders on the a10 and b33 - they stick very well but low profile loses a bit of clearance (which is a problem on the b33 plunger)

Oops - caught living in the past. It is indeed a Roadrider. It certainly seems to suit the Swinging Arm BSAs. Feels very secure and planted. The only tyre I have had problems with is the Dunlop K70 when fitted on the back. A couple of scary moments when one has let go on roundabouts and also limited tyre life - not much more than 1000 miles on the last one I tried.

Is the K70 also called a 'Gold Seal' which I also associate with a type of honey or herb *conf2*- probably more sticky than the K70.... *eek*

Roadriders for both mine.
Note this is a 12 year old thread.
Cheers

Couple of my bikes now have 4.10 x 19 Avon roadrunners on the rear because, as Black Sheep said, the K70 didn’t last long. But I disagree about the sticky suggestion. When I was hill-climbing, many other competitors were using roadrider-type racing tyres and were always coming off because the contact patch gets very small as you near the edge of the tread. K70’s enabled me to win my class more often than not. Using those tyres I once had 2nd FTD (of all bikes, single seaters, rally & saloon cars)

No matter what tire you buy,

get a great quality, heavy duty inner tube for it.

Great photo! When was it taken?

Coater87 - agree. I usually buy michelin. And get the right size! My som was putting new tyres on his pile of chinese crapola a few weeks ago, and I noted the front tube had overlapped itself in places. It was too big for the tyre - and had been fitted by a professional tyre co!
Greybeard - around mid 70's.

Wonder why the K70 didn't work for me. Heavier bike perhaps? Certainly had to lever myself off the seat after the slides and totter off to the laundry.

I will need tyres before next riding season. I'm thinking about buying Mitas brand.
