The Bsa parts book and service sheets are a bit ambiguous as to how the regulator is mounted in the tool box. The parts book does not show any rubber grommets other than the one that fits into the hole in the back of the tool box. In the Haynes manual, however, the drawings clearly show grommets fitted into the regulator mounting holes. Would these drawings be applicable to the rigid and plunger models only? I believe that on the rigid and plunger bikes the regulator is fixed to the rear mudguard. Can anybody shed any light on this apparent contradiction?

On Rigid & plungers it is indeed mounted on the rear mudguard.
But I'm not sure that answers your question!

My regulator mountings are flanges on either side of the base with holes for bolts to go through

John,what model is your bike? From "a101960" I take it it`s a later swingarm model with the alloy cased RB108 regulator:(item 45 in the haynes book p116). If so the regulator mounts in the toolbox thus: the regulator right hand rubber mounted stud bolts in to the vertical face of the "baffle" in the top of the tool box.The left hand rubber mounted stud bolts into a seperate bracket (bsa pt no:42-9264: item31 in the Haynes book)and that bracket bolts in turn through the corresponding hole in the back of the toolbox. The bracket has a square notch to slide the mount in from the front before nipping up the nut,Hope that makes sense, Bob.

This is dependent on the year.
Plunger and rigid models the reg mounts rigidly on the rear guard.
Swinging arm it mounts in the tool box.
!953 - 57 the RB107 was used which has grommets with ferrules in the mounting feet and the reg mounts on the rear of the box.
1958 saw the RB108 introduced which mounted the same as before.
I think during 1960 the modified RB108 with the rubbers and studs on the side of the reg cover was introduced along with the modified tool box to accept the revised mounts.

Thank you all for your help. I knew that there were one or two different regulators, but was unaware that were so many permutations. Anyway I think that I have got it worked out now. BTW I am using a DVR2. I just wanted to mount it in an old regulator box.

I mounted my DVR2 on the rear guard just behind the battery,(swing arm model) its not visible. I removed the baffle plate from the toolbox (I know, I know) but I now have lots of room in the toolbox for tools plus a pair of waterproof trousers.
Come to think of it that was all a bit pointless, BSA's never break down so you dont need tools and it never rains here in AUS so I dont need watertproof trousers................. *smiley4*

Well I think that Goolwa is offering big bucks to entice the BSAOC SA to hold another National Rally there.
I think they got around 8" on the National Weekend and it has not rained there since.
Campbell's Creek has rained on every ABR so far, actually come to think of it I can not remember an ABR that was dry.
As for the actual topic, the regulator & its mounting was a Lucas part .
You will find the grommets in the Lucas parts lists.
